LLMpedia.net research project

Dear Wikimedia Research Community, I am writing to share a new research project that may be of interest to this list: LLMpedia, an entirely LLM-generated Wikipedia-style encyclopedy, including a fully documented open construction pipeline. To be clear, LLMpedia does not at all achieve the quality standards of Wikipedia, nor is it ever intended as a substitute, but instead, this project shall illustrate the potentials and pitfalls of large-scale knowledge extraction from LLMs, and how easy it is to (politically) bias it. If this rings any bells w.r.t. Grokipedia then this is intentional, but unlike Grokipedia, LLMpedia does not paraphrase existing websites (RAG), but directly generates from parametric (LLM-only) memory. As a side effect, we also provide some funny leaks that offer a glimpse into Grokipedia's inner working. Hi Todd, Let me clarify, it is the content of LLMpedia that is Wikipedia-style, not its construction process. For content generation, the LLM directly writes Wiki syntax, including hyperlinks, infoboxes, etc. Cheers, Simon

Hey folks! On behalf of the rest of my research team, I wanted to share some info about a project to collect detailed evaluations of Wikipedia article quality, as part of a bigger project to study the impact that AI is having on Wikipedia content quality. Here's some basic info: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wiki_Education_in_the_Age_of_Gener… We set up a site for experienced (US-based) editors to evaluate articles, with compensation via Zelle or gift card. 🚀 Launched: Attribution API (Beta) is now available! 🚀

Good news, everyone! A new Attribution API <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Attribution_API> module is now available as a beta <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_APIs/Stability_policy> on all Wikimedia Foundation hosted wiki projects. The purpose of this API is to make it easier to appropriately attribute Wikimedia project content when it’s presented or referenced in off-wiki contexts. This API directly supports the Wikimedia Attribution Framework <https://wikimedia-attribution.toolforge.org/>, which provides specific guidelines for how to appropriately attribute content across different reuse scenarios and form factors. What does it do? The Attribution API <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Attribution_API>makes it easy to follow the guidelines outlined in the Wikimedia Attribution Framework <https://wikimedia-attribution.toolforge.org/>. The API provides the information required by each attribution signal in a single, well-structured and easy-to-use endpoint. Although the recommended attribution information was largely already available through existing APIs, this approach significantly simplifies the process for developers, which we believe will make it more likely that developers will follow the recommended standards. Who is it for? Appropriate attribution is critical for all reuse scenarios where Wikimedia content will be presented off-wiki, as it ensures that the content is fairly credited and that external readers remain aware of the Wikimedia projects and communities it came from. This means that if you make games, offer search services, use project content for research, build alternative reader experiences, or contribute to anything else happening off-wiki, you probably need to properly attribute Wikimedia content! This specific API is also primarily intended for mission-supporting users and use cases. Wikimedia Enterprise will offer similar information in their structured responses for scaled commercial reuse. How do I participate? We encourage everyone to try out the endpoints and give us your feedback on the project discussion page <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Attribution_AP>! Additionally, if you discover what you think might be a bug, please feel free to file an issue directly to the MediaWiki Interfaces Phabricator board <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/view/6931/>. Major changes will minimally be announced on the project page <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Attribution_API>. If you are interested in this capability, we recommend that you add the page to your watchlist to stay informed with the latest changes and calls for targeted feedback. Some of these changes may also be announced here or through Tech News, but the nature of a beta does not guarantee broad communication of every change. What should I expect? This API is available on all Wikimedia projects, and is initially being released as a beta <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_APIs/Stability_policy>. Reference documentation can be found in the REST API sandbox <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Special:RestSandbox&api=attribu…> on any Wikimedia wiki (such as the REST API sandbox on English Wikipedia <https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?api=attribution.v0-beta&title=Special%…>). Although available everywhere, the Attribution API only explicitly supports Wikipedia articles and media files hosted through either Wikipedia or Commons. We need your help testing and shaping additional project and content types to help inform how the information should be structured. We are continuing to iterate and refine the API. Although we expect the interface itself to remain relatively stable, the specific returned values are subject to change over time. Breaking changes to adjust the interface or response structures may also occur during the beta period as we respond to emerging feedback and feature requests. Following the beta period, we will elevate the API to a stable v1. This will be done after we are satisfied with meeting user expectations and when all high priority issues are resolved. Although there is not yet a firm date for when we will elevate this experience, we expect it to happen around September 2026, depending on the nature of requests that arise during the beta period. Additional communications will happen closer to the stable version launch date to ensure the community is aware of the upcoming change. WikiResearch Community Grant about helping you get grants

Hi All, Recently WikiResearch asked for feedback about the grants that were submitted. Following my WikiWorkshop presentation <https://docs.google.com/videos/d/116U2HrTV8P5i4h0E4hO5kBdVUyZhJ0sBFXtj9YnSG…> and unconference, I put in a project about identifying and sharing grants <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Research_Fund/Sha…> that are (potentially) relevant for the Wikimedia Research community. The core idea is to look at proven funders of Wikimedia related research, identify and send around grants that are relevant to the community, and help build teams and projects for people. With the funding that we requested, we expect to be able to support the submission of at least 10x the funding and hopefully also (receive) much more. In-person opportunities to meet up with WMF Research folks next week

Hello wiki-research-l, tl;dr a number of Wikimedia Foundation researchers will be working in Dublin, Ireland (for a team gathering) and Barcelona, Spain (for the CHI conference) next week. If you are present in those areas and interested in meeting up, please reply privately to me so that I can coordinate. Longer message: as a remote organization, we in the research team [1] at the Wikimedia Foundation are generally scattered about the world. Occasionally we attend in-person conferences or convenings though and we try to take that time to meet any local researchers or Wikimedians who are interested in research. Next week happens to have two separate convenings: - Several of us will be present in Dublin next week and there is an opportunity to meet the evening of Thursday 16 April. This is a larger gathering with other Wikimedia Foundation staff so there is unfortunately only space for four additional folks. Let me (isaac(a)wikimedia.org) know if you're in Dublin and interested. - Eli [2] and Yu-Ming [3] will also be present at CHI [4], which is happening in Barcelona. This is longer-running event (13–17 April) with more opportunities to meet up. Wikimedia Research Fund 2026 - Invitation for feedback

Hi everyone, On April 3, we closed the submission period for this year's Wikimedia Research Fund <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Research_%26_Tech…>. The proposals we received at this stage were a mix of research proposals who were invited to a full proposal stage based on an earlier letter of intent submission stage as well as event and community building proposals focused on strengthening the Wikimedia research communities. We have a total of 14 proposals: 10 research proposals and 4 research community building proposals. Similar to the previous years, we are opening an invitation to you to provide your feedback about one or more of them by *April 21, 2026 (23:59 Anywhere on Earth)*.
