At the reminders of your birthday I was remembering that I joined the Winedale family just a few months after your surprise 50th party at the Broken Spoke (I heard about it afterwards from my folks of course, and saw the ad in the Statesman that someone had clipped, later...) -- so I am now the same age as you were that spring so long ago when I first stumbled into the lamp-lit CAL 20 to mumble, "Hey, I might, um, want to find out more about this Winedale program, if I'm not doing a magazine internship..." -- which is profoundly inspiring, when I think about how much you have accomplished since then, and how many great things you still have ahead of you. Staggering, and a precious gift to all of us. When I feel a wave of "Oh God I'm 50!" weariness creeping in, I think of you striding ahead, no ends, only beginnings.... a most rare vision.

Happy birthday week and a lovely spring to you and JoAnn!
