Dear Doc and Pals,
I remember best Edith's sweet, shy smile. How she ministered to our ravenous appetites! I struggle to put into words the wonder of being at Winedale in 1970s when the distinctions between the local folks and the students were blurred in a way seemingly impossible without the plays, the idea of play and Doc's being both our teacher (with all we know that means) and able to create immediate and lasting relationships in Fayette County. Thank you, Doc. I am sorry about Edith's death and wish I could have attended her funeral.
I admire the idea of cedar planks in the barn for students we have lost. Could we consider photographs, too, if they were good enough and able to be presented in a way that would protect them? I am thinking of one of Donald
Britten that Laura Smith took, for example, and the one that accompanied Nancy Hellinghauser's obituary communicated so much about her. Craig, your idea of a Remembrance lunch is lovely.
How comforting it is, especially for those of us who can't be in Texas, to be in touch this spring, while we go through deaths, plantings, parties and ideas about going forward. Thank you all.
I love and miss you,
Mary

Doc, what about having an annual Rememberance ceremony and perhaps luncheon to celebrate their lives. I have a bunch of ideas if you and others think it might be a worhwhile endeavor. I've really enjoyed learning about those I never knew, and would love the honor to enlighten others about the friends I had at Winedale who have passed on.

Today Winedale was alive with kids from ACE Academy (Austin) spread
across the fields sounding out sonnet lines, then going into the barn
to perform them. It was a very special treat. But the best treat was
meeting Alice there, talking in the sunshine, checking out Virginia's
roses (they are doing fine), wandering in the theater to watch the
kids, having lunch together in Carmine, unhurried. So unhurried in
fact that we forgot to talk about what we met for: the proposed
Newsletter. We will get going on that. We also talked a bit about
memorials for former Sh at W students who have left us. It is time to
do that. I'm thinking about 8" x 10" Texas cedar pieces routed with
names and dates, placed in the theater "vestibule" along the
horizontal beams supporting the roof supports. My first thought was
to plant trees for each of them, but I am
concerned about the daily
care of those. I thought also about remembering folks whose
contributions we remember with great love: Miss Ima, Delphine,
Virginia, Rosa Lee, Rollie. I learned only today that Edith Klump,
who cooked for us at Lauderdale, died last Friday, was buried on
Sunday. Edith was Ronnie Klump's mom. Please send ideas.
Cheers,
Doc
