Wikimedia Foundation’s community liaisons

improving the collaboration between WMF software development teams and our
communities. We want to include more and more diverse people to work
together in friendly environments. For this goal, tech ambassadors and tech
translators play a crucial role. How can we support them (you!) better?
We would like to strengthen the roles of tech ambassadors and tech
translators. Make these roles more visible to new potential volunteers,
more enjoyable to contribute to, and more recognized across the Wikimedia
movement.
For this reason, we are calling current and prospective contributors to
help us define not only a solid definition of the roles, but also related
metrics that we will adopt as part of our Key Performance Indicators. We
will also explore pain points and opportunities for improvement in the
workflow of these roles. This activity has already started with a review of
Tech News as a way to effectively disseminate technical information, and
will continue with a review of other major product newsletters, among other
things.
We are sharing a draft of role definitions and KPIs. Of course, the end
result might be much different, depending on your input!

assured that even if we may not be able to reply to each message, we will
read and consider all of them.)

TL;DR: "New filters for edit review" is a project to add multiple features
to RecentChanges pages and Watchlists. The project page has been totally
rewritten to reflect the current status of this project, now stable. The
deployment by default will happen soon

translations in all languages are welcome.

This is the second version of the New filters for edit review page. The
first one has been translated when the Beta feature has been released on
May 2017. This new version is stable and will not change anymore (some
elements may be removed or some dates updated, but that will be minor
changes).
I know many of you have already spent time on that page and I want to thank
you for this. The success of this new feature was also possible because of
the documentation in user language.
This new version has been created based on user feedback received and
questions from the users about the features. We hope this rewriting will
help people to apprehend the new features for RecentChanges the best way.
Unfortunately, the new page doesn't kept anything from the previous
version. It has been a tough decision to take but we have done our best to
provide a page easy to translate.
As always, I'm available if you have any question.

This is a fairly long issue, but I think it has a number of important
updates – asking for feedback on local overrides for global
preferences, syntax highlighting, notifications when someone tries and
fails to log in to your account, ability to block others from pinging
you.
I'm planning to send the newsletter on Monday afternoon (UTC), i.e.
Monday morning PT. The existing translations will be posted on the
wikis in that language. Deadlines:

We noticed that some wikis have content namespaces that do not show up in
search results. We'd like to ask the communities if they want these pages
to appear in search results by default.
If I could please ask for your assistance, your help will make it possible
to ask the communities in their language and ensure clarity to the question.

Hey all, if you are not watching

here's an update that Subbu wanted to share with all of us about the
progress on the current initiative to fix wikitext patterns that behave
differently with RemexHTML.
Some wikis have really taken action, so that's good!, but some big
communities (notably enwp) are really behind...
As a reminder, the numbers you'll see in some dashboards do *not* mean you
need to fix millions of pages: most of the times you'll fix one template
and most if not all of them will be gone.
Also: if you want to support the communities in figuring out what's to be
done, note that

is marked for translation, but you could probably focus just on section 5
(the one I linked).
Finally, the team is always, always available for questions and

I wanted to post some followups on this.
1. We have a revived dashboard that tracks linter error counts on wikis
for all linter categories.

2. We track the error counts as they change and publish weekly snapshots
comparing counts to a July 24th baseline (which is when I first
started collecting stats)

3. We also have a pixel-diffs test run (previously called visual diffs)
that compares page rendering with Tidy and with RemexHTML. The test
set has 73K pages sampled from 60 wikis. These diffs more accurately
reflect what kind of rendering differences we can expect to see if
pages are not fixed.

4. Based on the runs above, I identified one more high priority linter
category which is a Tidy whitespace bug and needs to be fixed (expect
mostly templates, especially navboxes based on what I've seen in the
test run above). Once the code is reviewed and deployed to the
cluster, we'll start populating this category.

Just to let it known, some it.source contributors are using a comfortable
gadget to manage diacritics - it can delete, replace or add a pretty large
list of diacritical marks to any character with a single click.
It uses .normalize() string method, so decomposing-recomposing (when
possible) unicode characters and allowing to manage diacritics alone
indipendently from base ascii character.
Perhaps is this gadget "rediscovering the wheel"....? Anyway, the code is
