played on me many times by

Good point. It should thus say "Log in to '''edit this
page'''".
Anyway, I claim invalidity /only/ for
your argument that people won't notice that they can't edit pages
(or rather, I still claim that there are ways around it).
I don't challenge any of the other arguments that people have presented.
And right now, it doesn't look like anybody currently supports
restricting edits to logged in users, at least to begin with;
so it doesn't really matter.
