Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for joining this list. I'll introduce myself first, as one of the administrators, along with Volker. I'm the Engineering Manager of Fundraising Tech, but I'm both professionally and personally interested in this topic. It's an interesting tension at the Foundation that environmental sustainability is necessarily relevant to the work we're doing, as no one will care about the sum of all knowledge if no one's left to read it, and also necessarily tangential, as our projects are intentionally neutral.

Last week, I attended a fascinating talk by Dr. Bentley Allan and Dr. Benjamin Zaitchik about how a lot of the current models used to predict environmental changes based on human activity depend on deeply faulty data and assumptions. They were proposing a model that was more localized and dependent on political realities, as opposed to current models that are more global and macro.

With that tidbit, I'd love to hear from you! What interests you about environmental sustainability at the Wikimedia Foundation? Please also tell us how you'd like to see this list used. We're currently trying to decide on some norms.

Best,
Maggie
