I think that it would be best to emphasize global diversity and drop the implication that all editors are volunteers. For example: "Wikipedia is one of the most popular knowledge resources in the world; it is read by nearly half a billion people every month. From its humble origins nearly fifteen years ago, it now offers more than 35 million articles in 288 languages—including a number of indigenous languages—written by people from around the globe."

There are student editors who may not have exactly volunteered for Wikipedia assignments, and there are paid editors who range from the transparent and ethical to the opaque and dishonest.
