Katherine, I imagine you saying that in a voice most people would reserve for "well, when I was in college..."

Sorry for the kerfuffle, but thanks for pushing this piece again! :-)

I think being sharp-tongued is something of a pre-requisite for using Twitter. ;)

Maybe the journalist was so used to using Wikipedia as a reference work for general knowledge that (because of association) they didn't think/feel they needed to reference the WMF blog?

Maybe. I think, though, that most blogs these days add credit to the end of their articles with things like "hat-tips", which requires you to be interested enough to scroll through the article first to find the source.

Have there been any recent posts about the importance of proper citations? Might be a good time to tweet it out - or write one if it doesn’t exist or address this context.

I am always a fan of teachable moments when things like this happen that could wind up getting outside attention. :)

PS. I am shocked to learn that WMF C-Lvl were once sharp-tongued on Twitter - shocked! ;)

Yep. And then they didn't source it. Super uncool. You may see I got a little grumpy about it on Twitter.

Hi all,

We just published "The first smile and photobomb ever photographed" to the blog: http://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/09/18/first-smile-photobomb-wales/

Thank you to Jason for the hard work he's put in here and Daria for putting us in touch.

Suggested social media messages follow:

Twitter:
Take a look at the first smile ever photographed:
Take a look at possibly the first #phobobomb:

Facebook/Google+:
Wales, 1853: photography history was made.
We will never know what made Willy smile for his aunt.
An 1800s #photobomb looks a bit different than today's.

I'm always open to different or improved messaging. Thanks!
