Hello,
I'd like to inquire if the prohibition [1] to enable wgKartographerWikivoyageMode on more wikis is still valid as of today.
An eswiki user organised a vote [2] to change the wiki config to the following values:
* $wgKartographerWikivoyageMode = true; * $wgKartographerStaticMapframe = false; * $wgKartographerEnableMapFrame = false;
To avoid spending time in something that might not be possible, may I ask if any of their proposals can be done?
If $wgKartographerWikivoyageMode is still banned for further further wikis; what effects would have setting the later two configs to `false`?
Thanks for your help/advice on this matter.
Best regards, Marco.

Hello,
summarizing our IRC discussion here. I'm still not sure what exactly "Wikivoyage mode" is. However, I'm not going to enable it on eswiki, for two reasons:
- it is explicitly discouraged in the config, - it is called "Wikivoyage mode", and eswiki is not a Wikivoyage.
Setting wgKartographerEnableMapFrame to false will likely disable <mapframe> tag, see https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/g/mediawiki/extensions/Kartographer/+/e5064e1ff.... This feature is currently used on almost 2k of eswiki pages, cf. https://w.wiki/44X2. I don't see why disabling it should be a (technical) issue (but it's probably not something wanted by eswiki community).
wgKartographerStaticMapframe = false will *likely* enable dynamic maps, like at commonswiki. I'm not sure if changing this variable has any performance impact -- but considering this variable is set to false at much larger wikis, like commonswiki, it is probably not an issue.
In my opinion, this is a classic example of the XY problem. As soon as a ticket is created about this, my first question will be "Why do you want this configuration"?

My understanding is that they want to have dynamic maps as in commons. If that can be achieved simply by setting $wgKartographerStaticMapframe to false then I can tell them so they can correct the proposal (and submit the right request to Phabricator).
