I heard something about your experiments with a SVN2GIT tool or
solution? May I ask what the status there? What about that?
We used KDE's svn2git to convert core and compat from svn to git. The code & configuration is available here: https://github.com/pywikibot/svn2git but you might also have success with other (easier, but slower or less configurable) tools.
