The blog post just published <https://blog.wikimedia.org/2014/07/10/pywikibot-will-have-its-next-bug-tria…> so you can read and use it to advertise. 2- As our talk in here <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API_talk:Client_code/Evaluations/Pywikibot> I want to make a patch to add username in user-agent in header of API calls. but only ISO 8859 is being supported and usernames can be anything (utf-8). For usernames that might not compatible, people need to put e-mail address in user-config.py. Is it okay for you? Any comments? Best -- Amir

reflinks.py under GPL?

I found this in the source code of scripts/reflinks.py: Distributed under the terms of the GPL This seems to be the single case in the whole repository. Is it compatible with our license conventions? It even doesn't have a full GNU-style license header.

API query

Why do we prefer "generator=" to normal query? The disadvantage of generator is that API might ignore some parameters. For example, we can't do generator=categories&gclprop=sortkey, while we can do prop=categories&clprop=sortkey. -- Sorawee Porncharoenwase

best place for general feature requests?

Hello all, I'm finishing up the evaluation portion of my API client library internship project. As a part of that, I'm making sure that feedback/bug reports/feature requests end up where they should be. I made several suggestions at the end of the pywikibot-core evaluation,[1] and have been linking bugzilla issues to some of the criteria. I also left comments on the documentation RFC [2] with the documentation-related suggestions. This leaves a handful of larger-scale/general/structural suggestions for change: * As of 25 July 2014, there are 105 open patches in gerrit. The patch review process should be streamlined and/or prioritized to reduce the backlog of unreviewed patches. * Iterating over a list and calling the API for each item is an inefficient use of API calls. Pywikibot could be made more efficient by combining API calls as much as possible (e.g. using generators and combining resultstitle=title1|title2|...). One option may be a constructor method that collects Page requests and enables larger, less frequent API calls. * The initial installation process features a series of obscure options and confusing installation documentation. Redesign the initial installation/configuration process to be lighter-weight, soliciting and valuing feedback from new or one-time users in the redesign process. Is it necessary to be logged in before `import pywikibot` will not cause an error? * Foster a hospitable attitude on pywikipedia-l, especially to new and/or inexperienced users. Consider agreeing on community standards for interaction; the Hacker School social rules[3] may be a useful starting point. Is Bugzilla the best place for these? Would these be useful to discuss at the pywikibot hackathon at Wikimania? Minimum supported mw versions

What is the minimum supported mw version for core and compat? It looks like the lowest family version() are.. core: lockwiki with 1.15.1 (not confirmed as special:version requires registration) compat: wesolve with 1.5.7, loveto with 1.8.2, and then wikitravel_shared with 1.10.1 and mozilla with 1.10.2, wikibond with 1.11alpha and twcareer & celtic & botwiki with 1.11.0, wekey & ubuntutw & openttd with 1.12.0 & krefeldwiki with 1.12alpha Re wesolve, wordsandmore.org is no longer a wiki. Re loveto, lovetoknow.com/1911encyclopedia.org/webguru.com are in various states of 'no longer a wiki'. wikitravel shared, it is now 1.22 (http://wikitravel.org/shared/Special:Version) mozilla, it is now 1.19.11 Re wikibond & twcareer & celtic & ubuntutw, they appear to be dead. botwiki is now 1.17 wekey is now 1.16 openttd is now 1.19.1 krefeldwiki is still 1.12alpha! botwiki:Template:Script <http://botwiki.sno.cc/wiki/Template:Script> lists some old PWB scripts. it:Utente:BimBot/Scripts <https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utente:BimBot/Scripts> contains some others. They could still be useful, even if they'd be rewritten almost completely.

new "version" item on Bugzilla

Currently, the "Version" field of our bugs can only be set to one of "compat (1.0)", "core (2.0)" or "unspecified". Why not to create a new "both" option to explicitly indicate that the bug is valid for both versions? So, "unspecified" would only mean that the bug has not been tested on both versions. (Ideally, the "version" field should consist of two checkboxes, one for each version.)

The build is broken

The build was repeatedly broken over the last week. Two of the build breakages have been fixed. I think one was caused by changes to WMF site configuration. https://travis-ci.org/wikimedia/pywikibot-core/builds/30824554 And the other caused by merging a fix without checking the tests worked correctly. https://travis-ci.org/wikimedia/pywikibot-core/builds/30831527 And there is still one more bug that needs to be fixed. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68564 Or we need to roll back the several commits which caused categories to be broken. scripts repository

Are we going to have a 'scripts' repository (see bug 64871 <https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=64871>), really? Pros: * the size of the package would decrease dramatically (more than half of the overall), becoming a cleaner environment for experienced users who only run their own scripts; * we could move most scripts to subdirectories without running into maintainability issues. Cons: * Gerrit patches that change both scripts and core files would have to be split in two; * less experienced users (who often use the bundled scripts) would have to fetch dependencies.

Retrieve content of multiple pages at once

I remember that in compat we have a function named "getAll" or something like that which will retrieve content of pages at once. Although in core we have parameter "content" in most functions, it is possible that we want to get content of pages which are irrelevant to each other (and therefore we can't use existing functions). pywikibot/__init__.py contains the following lines: from pywikibot.textlib import * from pywikibot.i18n import translate Are we supposed to always use pywikibot.translate() instead of i18n.translate()? (actually, I did the opposite <https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/136609>) Or pywikibot.replaceExcept() instead of textlib.replaceExcept()? If not, can we recommend to always use from pywikibot import textlib?

Bug 64881: Port wiktionary tools and move to own repo

Hi everyone, Per bug 64881[1], I have copied all of compat's wikitionary/ folder into a separate repository named pywikibot/wiktionary. I also did some minor pep8-ification[2]. The tests were failing though[3], and I don't understand the code enough to fix them. However, now compat also has a copy of the code. Should we just turn wiktionary/ into a submodule pointing at the separate repository? Also, AFAIS wiktionary.py is just a copy of all the individual files combined together. I'm not sure what to do with it. new bot standard

I hereby propose to create a common way for bot classes to 'pipe' the changed text to other classes without saving it directly to the wiki. So, botops could do something like: python pwb.py pipe [generator] scripts/harvest_template [options] + scripts/weblinkchecker [options] + scripts/replace [options] to make custom replacements, check external links and enrich Wikidata with a single edit (except for the Wikidata import process).

Panoramiopicker.py in core?

Hi, Having found a few interested pictures with historic monuments on Panoramio, I've ported panoramiopicker.py for core. In the process, I did a "few hacks" in order to get a complete description page for my use-case, so I've ended up with a messy code, quite far from the original. However, the script is now more permissive with the layout changes and even recognises cc-by licenses. My question is: is anyone using or at least planning to use this script? The effort to clean the code and have it reviewed is non-trivial and I will only make it if anyone is interested. Thanks, Strainu
