httplib2 includes its own list of trusted certificates at https://code.google.com/p/httplib2/source/browse/python2/httplib2/cacerts.txt - the DigiCert certificate at the top of wikimedias certificate chain is not included in there so you can't make any requests. This works in Ubuntu because they patched the httplib2 package to use the system certificate store.
