The kerning still isn't perfect (which may be a problem with the font
and/or gimp, and need some manual correction), but here's what I came up
with when I set the letter spacing to -4 in gimp. I like this better. The
default spacing on that font is set way too wide.
The biggest kerning issue to my mind is between the p and y.

I didn't even think about that. Will people recognize mediawiki from
the sunflower?

@ben
Thanks for the feedback about the text. I use the free and open
http://overpassfont.org/ - I like how the small letters of the font
are at an angle similar to the gears. But I am open for suggestions.

I like it. My one suggestion is to fix the
kerning on "pywikibot" -- the
letters are spaced too far apart and make the overall logo too stretched
out
horizontally. I suspect with tighter kerning the
entire image could fit
into a square aspect ratio, which is typically what you want for logos.
What font did you use?
