The kerning still isn't perfect (which may be a problem with the font and/or gimp, and need some manual correction), but here's what I came up with when I set the letter spacing to -4 in gimp.  I like this better.  The default spacing on that font is set way too wide.

Thanks for the feedback about the text. I use the free and open
http://overpassfont.org/ - I like how the small letters of the font
are at an angle similar to the gears. But I am open for suggestions.
