Hello Dimi,

I am more than happy to speak about this at the meeting in Brussels and think it would be useful! I shall prepare something.

Many thanks,

Stevie

Hey Stevie,

Absolutely great to hear it has already received some positive replies. I am getting excited. Make sure you follow up on the people who replied and try to build up a relationship with them.

Could you perhaps  give us a short presentation about this initiative at the Big Fat Brussels Meeting Vol. 2? I believe this is a project that can very well be upscaled and made in other EU countries. What a great chance to transfer know-how across the movement and build capacity to represent our interests.

Cheers,
Dimi

Hello everyone,

Nikolas, sorry I didn't respond to this before, I must have missed your message. Your point is certainly valid and I'll bear it in mind for any future activity.

On the Wikimedia UK letter to local MEPs, we've had four messages of support so far, representing the three largest political parties here. This is just a start and I am sure more will follow. I'll offer an update at a later time.

Thanks and regards,

Stevie

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the initiative! A point that might be taken into account for future initiatives: Instead of talking just about "our" situation (we can't use), we imho should frame this as a general problem: "Free and open media can't use ..." or s.th. like that ...

Hello again,

Thanks once more for the useful feedback. The letter has now been sent. The final print version can be seen at https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/File:Letter_to_MEPs_with_images.pdf

Thanks and regards,

Hello again,

Just to pick this up once more.

Matthias, I take your point about the turnover of MEPs. But the sooner we get this out, the sooner people begin paying attention. If we wait for a perfect time - like some other groups - we will likely get lost in the noise. There's no reason we can't follow-up with newly elected MEPs in the summer. Also, I see what you mean about Big Ben potentially being misinterpreted. It's also not a great example as it would be out of copyright anyway, so am going to use a different image.

Bence - that was a useful spot, thank you. The updated version has the links as footnotes.

I'm going to make some changes to the letter today and I'm hoping to get the final version printed and sent by the end of the week.

Thanks and regards,

Stevie

There is already too much bad diplomacy out there, so thanks for Dimis
argument. As you can see from
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Parliament_election,_2014_(United_Kingdom)#Current_MEPs_by_European_Political_Group,
the number of parties who did send MEPs to Brussels was considerable.
It would be possible to send such a letter to the parties before the
election and to the specific elected MEPs afterwards.
