Wikimedia CH has sponsored a long Kiwix Hackathon
(and the WMF two
tablets) and there is the result, the first version of Kiwix (and also
the first ZIM reader) for Android:

this is so great! I just wanted to install it but it doesn't seem to be
available for my phone. It's just two years old and was one of the best
phones when I bought it (HTC Desire Z).
Yes, it's only available for Android4+. We are not so proud about that,
because we don't want to encourage the people to always buy the
last/trendy device.
Unfortunately, "backporting" an app. is always something pretty
expensive in resources. But, like for Kiwix, we will do our best to keep
the compatibility with Android4 as long as possible.
Anyway, I am very happy to see another Android ZIM
Reader. What did
happen to the WikiOnBoard reader by the way?
I'm not the best one to answer about that :) but as far as I know it
works and is in the Nokia App store or freely downloadable online at:
http://cip.github.io/WikiOnBoard/
BTW, we have tested during the hackathon the java zim library using the
xz java version and it works well... it's simply to slow :(. More
information about other ZIM compatible softwares and libraries on the
openZIM page (I have revamped the wiki in January):
