Hi folks,
I’m happy to announce that we’ve just released Media Viewer on the English and German Wikipedias.
We’ll keep you posted on the feedback we hear from these two important sites, but wanted you to know right away, so you can spread the word in your community.
For now, you can check the discussions on both sites (1) (2), and on
MediaWiki.org (3). And you will be able to track local metrics tomorrow (4). From an operations standpoint, our servers seem to be handling this surge well. And the survey responses continue to show steady approval for this feature (5).
If all goes well with these releases, we then plan to deploy the tool on all wikis next week, as described in our release plan. (6)
Note that we have updated the wording of the preference that lets you disable this feature, by unchecking the box called ‘Enable Media Viewer’ in the Files section of your Appearances tab. Learn more on the Media Viewer help page. (7)
Many thanks to all the community and team members who helped make Media Viewer possible! This tool was created with active community participation from its early planning phase -- all the way to its final release. This has been an exceptionally productive partnership, which we hope to build on for future projects.
To be continued,
Fabrice — for the Multimedia Team
