Return to is set but I have to click the return to link to get back to
the article. It seems very unnecessary and effects our CTA workflows
by adding an extra step. Kenan - any opinions on this?

Login (at Enwiki at least) does currently automatically send you back to the
page you were at.
I'm not sure if we'd want to match that for Signup, as the reminder to
check/change Preferences is useful... However, a

pointing directly to the "Preferences" link) might be good.
