I would not recommend using your own jQuery snippets to make the MediaWiki navigation collapsible. There's a very well intergrated and maintained extension already that does this from the inside out.

If that doesn't work, there's probably a bigger issue to concern about. I wouldn't recommend avoiding, the problem is likely not in the extension.
