Has anybody used Microsoft SQL instead of my SQL to setup a wiki?

Not to my knowledge. Mediawiki doesn't support it by default - there is support for postgreSQL in addition to MySQL, but that's it. I'm not familiar with MS SQL, it might be possible to add support for it, but I expect it would be a lot of work.
It probably would be a lot of work because, based on the code as it exists today, MediaWiki uses engine-specific database connection methods. I also believe - though this is not something I am 100% sure of - that some of the plugin/helped modules are MySQL-only and will not work with PostgreSQL.

Someone put together a patch: http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9767
However it's probably out of date and you're likely to run into problems with both rarer code paths in the main MediaWiki code and many extensions. PostreSQL is much more actively supported and still experiences many such problems.
My strong recommendation is to just install MySQL and be done with it. It's free, and a small installation doesn't take a lot of resources.

There is often a lot of resistance to MySQL in corporate environments from established IT depts who refuse to extend support outside of what they know and have a knee jerk hatred of Open Source. I've encountered this.
On a wider philosophical note, Sun's recent purchase of MySQL is probably a good stick with which to fight this tendency!
