Hi wiki guys!
How do I update mediawiki on a shared webhosting? I dont have a shell.
Please dont point me to these websites who are describing "Yeeee, rename the localsettings and run the installation process again" (like seen here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Upgrading/de#Alternative_2:_Erneute_Ins... )
So it would be very nice, if someone could give some hints what I need to do step by step on a shared webhosting package without shell access.

You don't need to rename LocalSettings.php if you're upgrading to 1.17: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Upgrading#Web_.28MediaWiki_1.17_and_lat... Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the German version of those instructions has been updated to note that.
Im using Version 1.15 (sorry, I did not mention that)
So I am running through these steps:
Web (MediaWiki 1.16 and earlier)
In MediaWiki 1.16 and earlier, you can upgrade the wiki by re-running the web installerhttp://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Installing_MediaWiki#Run_the_installation_script. To do this, I follow these steps:
1. Rename *LocalSettings.php* to *LocalSettings.old.php* 2. Make the *config* directory writable by the web server 3. Make sure the database user has full rights to the database 4. Browse to the wiki and start the installer Fill in the form fields with the same values as was done during the previous version's installation.When the installation process starts, the script will detect existing MediaWiki tables, and upgrade their schema.When this is complete, a new * LocalSettings.php* will be generated. 5. Delete the new configuration file (*LocalSettings.php*) 6. Rename *LocalSettings.old.php* back to *LocalSettings.php* 7. Restore permissions on the *config* directory
So all what i get is a new LocalSettings.php and no update. U can call me "Frank" but this really does not work for me.

What matters is the version you're upgrading to. You should upgrade to 1.17.

To double-check: are you upgrading *from* 1.15 or *to* 1.15?
Whether you run updates from the command-line or using the installer, you do first need to replace the old MediaWiki files with the new ones. If you run the updater/installer for the same version you're already running, it'll just do a run over the database and end up not adding anything new.
(Yes it's not as convenient as the auto-update systems in say modern WordPress. We're still working on that one. :)
You should probably upgrade directly to 1.17 and skip over 1.16 (but be aware 1.18 should be released within a couple weeks, it's getting its incremental deployment & shakedown on Wikimedia's sites right now).

yes this was exactly the fault i did! Now it is working for me on the testinstallation! *smile*
