I have one or more spambots that keep coming back on a specific page, you can see it in action here: http://www.whatleadership.us/wiki/Special:Recentchanges (this is a test set up - the site is not ready for visitors yet)
Tried to install SpamBlacklist. Used the simple setup suggested for localsettings.php (without including array). Did not get it to work.
Also tried to protect the page with no result.
The SpamBlacklist extension's talk page has old discussions about it not working, no apparent solution at hand.
Any hints?

You could try addressing the issue directly to the abuse staff at the source ISP:
http://www.db.ripe.net/whois?form_type=simple&full_query_string=&sea...
I put the offending IP address into the ARIN whois web page (http://www.arin.net/whois/) and then see which IP it's coming from. ARIN will tell you if the IP is allocated in a smaller block and give you a link to a further IP search web page.
I see you've been putting all the offending IPs into the blocked IP list. That has limited value since the IPs of spammers change so often.
You could try installing a Captcha extension. If the spammer is a bot, they tend to be stopped by that.

I use the CIDR notation - that's enough for x.y.z.w/16 nets.

Captcha is evil. It blocks the good guys very well, and it blocks the bad guys poorly (is that english? please excuse my gerlish)

It's a pretty narrow view to take of Captchas. As I said before, the reCaptcha plug-in still allows anonymous edits, it only requires code entry if that captcha has an external link or the visitor is trying to create a new user on the wiki.
I run a reasonably popular wiki, around 2000 visitors per day, and I've never had a single spam edit since I installed the plug-in a couple of years ago.

Interesting approach: "As captcha blocks the good guys, it's better to block the subnet" Still, it could be merged as "evensofterblocks", where the user can edit, but needs to fill a captcha which it usually doesn.t

Blocking the subnet is not my first counter measure ... Some nets are abused by many bad guys, and the abuse department doesn't block them: then I block that net.

How lovely, all those spambots adding and removing the spam from its partners.

That's because hi5.com isn't on the meta blacklist http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Spam_blacklist
Try adding it to http://www.whatleadership.us/wiki/MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist
Also tried to protect the page with no result.
The pages on those RecentChanges aren't protected. Note that on deleting, the page will no longer be protected. You need to protect against creation.

You can also try ConfirmEdit http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ConfirmEdit You can configure it to trigger a captcha on link additions/all edits.
You might want to look at installing the reCaptcha plug-in. I use it on all of my wikis and it works perfectly. By default it will require captchas for anonymous users that make edits containing external links and for new user signups.

There are excellent robot.txt files out there on the net and if you google for them you might find some and if that doesn't work, make a .htacces file which will block them indefinitely.

I have some ideas for dealing with things like this, but I'd rather talk about it on a mailing list that isn't publically archived, so that the bot operators responsible can't trivially determine the nature of our filters by searching for themselves in Google. The AntiBot extension in particular needs some sort of private distribution system for plugins.
