Thanks Lonny. Apparently, I had installed everything correctly but
the googlemaps extension has a little quirk (or is it Mediawiki's
quirk? Dunno) that requires you to save the page again to get it to
display the map OR add a small bit of text at the end of the URL (I
think it was ?action=purge) . Once I did the purge bit, the map
magically appeared!
I think I still need to upgrade to be able to take advantage of the
built in map edit feature, so that's next on my agenda.

Hi Sandy,
You need to also install an extension such as
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Google_Maps . I am using that
extension for pages such as
http://www.appropedia.org/Arcata_marsh .
Good luck,
Lonny

Is my problem that I am using v1.5.8, perhaps?

The documentation that I've found online
hasn't been very clear on
how to add the Google maps to MediaWiki. I've signed up for a key
and edited my Localsettings.php file to reflect that, but how do
you get the code to insert on one of the Wiki pages? And how do
you get it to work? I copied some code that I found on someone
else's Wiki and inserted it into one of mine, but no map shows up
-- just the actual googlemap code.
Help!
