Thanks for the replies.
It turned out that my new account at
bluehost.com was hosted on a
mchine with PHP4. The mediawiki 1.9.1 install script was incorrectly
detecting PHP5.0 but correctly telling me that I needed PHP5.1
Bluehost.com advertise "PHP4 or 5 - your choice" and it seems like
you get PHP4 unless you ask for 5 in which case you get transferred to
a machine with 5.1 in just a few hours and the mediawiki1.9 is up and
running :-)
Next job is to sort out shorter URLS.

Has anybody installed mediawiki 1.9 on a
bluehost.com account yet?
The install script is telling me "PHP 5.0.x is buggy on your 64-bit
system; you must upgrade to PHP 5.1.x or higher. ABORTING.
(
http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=34879 for details)
so I've opened a support ticket requesting PHP5.1x
Meanwhile, or if they don't want to upgrade I wonder what workarounds
may be available.
Get a new host :)
