Hi,
writing text in the german Wikipedia I noticed that <math>\phi</math>
<math>\phi\,</math> delivers different phi's. In the first case a HTML
symbol is used, in the second case a graphic with a different phi from
LaTeX is generated. It seems to me there is an error in the TeX generation.
Depending on your preferences, Mediawiki will generally try to display
formulae in HTML where possible and only use png images where HTML is
insufficient. Adding whitespace like that makes Mediawiki think it
can't be done (simply) in HTML so it uses an image. The English
Wikipedia help page
(
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Displaying_a_formula) explains it
(the "Forced PNG rendering" section) quite well.
