I think some maintenance script allow you to set the user name. They use
user_id 0, but with the given name, so users don't see the difference.

I'm a MW beginner as well, but AFAIK the ~~~~ is converted to text upon
save, so you could just enter the actual result-text immediately as well (if
you know the author, you can also know the user name/nickname that replaces
the ~~~~.
You're right. You could event change your preferences so ~~~~ expands to
a different user signature.
The real signing user can be verified on the history tab.
But why would you want to su to them?? You can always place their name
and note on the summary that you're copying it from FooBar. Allowing
admins to change their identity completely breaks accountability.
