Thanks Marko but, I don't see where the user preferences get extended.
I must definitely be missing something.

take a look at

When you look at installation instructions, it will tell you to modify a
couple of MediaWiki files - this is probably not needed if you just want
to
check out preferences. Just install the extension by
putting it in
extensions/ directory and adding the necessary line to LocalSettings.php
as
per instructions.
