Notepad inserts a BOM character if you save as UTF-8, with no option
that I'm aware of to remove it. (Though you can re-open the file as
ANSI, remove the three bytes at the start, and re-save it...)
I usually use jEdit on Windows (requires Java), though others may have
other recommendations.
