Just a quick note: "Wikipedia" is actually a trademark of the Wikimedia Foundation, so it's best not
to get into the habit of referring to something as "a Wikipedia" if it isn't part of wikipedia.org.
The generic term is simply "a wiki" or "a WikiWiki".

My guess would be that that was the formatting for [[MediaWiki:fromwikipedia]] - but I've just
noticed that that message doesn't appear *at all* under monobook - anyone have any idea why not?
Just an oversight?

Were you thinking of just a list of inline links (and not have many categories) or an actual
drop-down menu (which would be better for a large list of categories)? The former you might be able
to do with strange bits of JavaScript and CSS (although I dread to think how) or by modifying the
monobook skin itself (and, of course, any other skin you let your users select once they log in).
For the latter (and indeed the former, if you don't have any PHP wizards amongst you but want an
auto-updating list) I guess you'll have to lodge a Feature Request at the software's Sourceforge
Tracker (https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?atid=411195&group_id=34373&func=browse) and hope someone
feels like coding it for you.
I'm afraid I'm not very familiar with the skinning and CSS and stuff, so can't be more helpful than
that. Perhaps someone else can shed a bit more light on your options.

Thanks. I don't think we'll exceed that! I hope not, anyway!
I appreciate your quick responses.
We're still working the customized menu issue. I'll let you know how we make
out. :)

Wiki version: 1.3beta2
We're building our wiki enthusiastically and have come across the warning
that a file should not exceed 32K because some browsers may not be able to edit
them.
So far, the volunteer who has been loading the large files has not had a
problem editing these larger files, but was concerned with the warning.
Is the only reason for the limiting of file size due to the editing or is
there another issue we should be concerned with -- such as storage or search
performance?
Thanks,
Debi
mediawiki 1.3beta3 on Debian testing with apache2 and the other standard
packages.
On my actually private Knowledgebase I wanted to try out the setting of
read and write access restrictions like so:
# only sysops and developers may add users
$wgWhiteListAccount = array ( "sysop" => 1, "developer" => 1 );
# I want only registered users to add and edit articles
$wgWhiteListEdit = true;
$wgWhiteListRead = array ( ":Hauptseite" );
Only it doesn't make any changes to the behaviour of the wiki.
Whether I'm logged in or not I can view whatever page I want and can also
add or edit them.
Something I missed?

Hello,
I installed MEdiaWiki 1.2.6 yesterday without
problems.
I also downloaded a few db dumps from the wikipedia
site.
(for example:20040620_cur_table.sql)
How do i install the data into my Wiki for testing
using phpMyadmin?
Also, How do I customize the look/feel of my wiki
pages?
Thanks
Joe

Hello Everyone,
I'm setting up a wiki where I need the same section headings to appear
in every entry - ie a fixed page format. Therefore, it should ideally
do the following:
- When a user creates a new entry, the default page should contain the
required section headings. (As opposed to being empty, which is the
usual situation).
- When anyone submits a page, the entry should only be updated if the
sections are retained.
I can't find anything about this sort of functionality in the
documentation or mailing list archives. Is it possible to do this, or
is there any work planned in this direction?
Thanks,
Michael
Hello
I installed WikiMedia 1.2.6 ok, seems to be working
fine.
Now I downloaded a bit of the SQL dumps
"20040620_cur_table.sql"
Now, how do I install these into my DB, so I can see
the example data using phpMyAdmin?
ALSO, which page(s) do I need to edit to customize the
look/feel of my wiki page?
Thanks

Our team is looking mostly for a navigation menu like the current one below
the search box in the monobook skin, but would contain our Category:xxx links.
We are attempting to keep the number of categories to no more than 10. It is a
very small wiki and very specialized. Perhaps as we grow, we might consider a
drop-down menu, but that sounds like it might require more coding time than
what our current team of volunteers can handle.

Okay, thanks.
