Recent parser change regarding tildes in comments?
by Thomas Dalton 28 Feb '26

28 Feb '26

Has the parser just been changed with regards to tildes (~~~~) inside HTML comments? It appears they used to be ignored, and are now suddenly being replaced en masse the next time someone edits the page (and can't be easily reverted - it just changes the sig to the reverter's instead). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_creation/2006-06-02-ear… for an example.

RE: [Mediawiki-l] Re: How to create a new Special page
by Bart Q. Simon 26 Nov '25

26 Nov '25

I distinctly remember there was a way to add a title to a special page simply by entering in a URL, then adding the title to the wiki edit field, and then saving. The new "writing a new special page" how-to is very confusing - and it wants me to write PHP to get the title to show up. There was an easier way... I can't find this how-to anywhere- though I'm sure it used to exist. FX can you walk me through how you've added a wiki page title to a special page? Thanks! -----Original Message----- From: mediawiki-l-bounces(a)Wikimedia.org [mailto:mediawiki-l-bounces@Wikimedia.org] On Behalf Of Rick DeNatale Sent: Thursday, May 19, 2005 2:33 PM To: MediaWiki announcements and site admin list Subject: Re: [Mediawiki-l] Re: How to create a new Special page On 5/13/05, FxParlant <f-x.p(a)laposte.net> wrote: > Hello; > There is a paragraph on how to create a special page in the FAQ > > > http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:FAQ#How_do_I_add_my_own_dynamic_cont ent_to_MediaWiki.3F > > It's not so difficult. I haven't > got a clue why creating a page with the name in it solves this, but it works That page seems to have changed, it now just has a pointer to an article about writing an extension which really doesn't seem to build a special page. I just figured out how to build a new special page which is like the Uncategorized pages page, but looks at the Image namespace. I wrote it up at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Writing_a_new_special_page _______________________________________________ MediaWiki-l mailing list MediaWiki-l(a)Wikimedia.org http://mail.wikipedia.org/mailman/listinfo/mediawiki-l

Are there any good resources for writing scripts and gadgets
by Arcane 21 25 Nov '25

25 Nov '25

I'm currently trying to adapt several gadgets that are meant for wikis using the Monobook/Vector skins to the Monaco skin, and so far, I've managed to successfully port over the UTC Clock gadget and Sandbox page gadget to Monaco, but aside from those I've been having trouble since, frankly, my knowledge of Javascript/JQuery is slim and I'm not familiar with all the variables used in writing user scripts. I've fairly decent with CSS style sheets, but I still need help with Javascript, so does anyone know of some good resources I could look into, preferably tailored for writing scripts on MediaWiki? Also, if anyone wants to see what I have done so far (and have released publicly), the wiki I have been testing my live gadget/user script code on is here: https://mediawikitesters.orain.org/wiki/Main_Page

Magnolia677 deserved the death threats I made to her because she was attacking me and calling my edits stupid
by MidAtlanticBaby . 11 Aug '25

11 Aug '25

So apparently y'all care more about the people that hurt me than y'all care about me? So y'all are going to IGNORE THE FACT that Magnolia677 WENT OFF ON me because i was making a bunch of edits to Florida county articles that she and 3 other admins didnt like me making and then I got REPORTED by ANOTHER EDITOR to ANI for STANDING UP for myself against her ATTACKING me? And y'all are gonna ASSUME i made the death threats for no reason for my own fucking ENJOYMENT? Y'all are ALLOWED to be an asshole to me and im not supposed to be an asshole to you back? Do y'all not have any respect for other people or their emotions? Is that like y'all's GOAL, to MAKE people suffer for the rest of THEIR FUCKING LIFE when they get blocked on a wiki and they GET MAD about it and take it out RIGHTFULLY on the person that blocked them? Are y'all nothing but some sadistic ass racist ass motherfuckers who want everything to go THEIR WAY and who want to control OTHER PEOPLE'S emotions or how they feel about their block? Are y'all JUSTIFYING Magnolia's and Drmies' actions towards me because theyre white and I'M black?

MediaWiki 1.42 is End of Life
by Sam Reed 01 Jul '25

01 Jul '25

As per the MediaWiki version lifecycle[1], I would like to announce the formal end of life (EOL) of MediaWiki 1.42 as of Monday June 30, 2025. 1.42.7 is expected to be the last release for this branch. This means that MediaWiki 1.42 will no longer receive maintenance or security backports. It is therefore strongly discouraged that you continue to use it. It is recommended to upgrade either to the next LTS, 1.43, which will be supported until December 2027, or to the soon to be released MediaWiki 1.44, which will be supported until at least June 2026. Thanks! [1] https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Version_lifecycle

Security pre-release announcement: 1.39.13 / 1.42.7 / 1.43.2
by Sam Reed 28 Jun '25

28 Jun '25

Hi all, On Monday we will be issuing a security and maintenance release to all supported branches of MediaWiki. The new releases will be: - 1.39.13 - 1.42.7 - 1.43.2 This will also resolve security issues in bundled extensions, along with bug fixes included for maintenance reasons. These security issues also affect many unsupported versions of MediaWiki. We will make the fixes available in the respective release branches and master in git. Tarballs will be available for the above mentioned point releases as well. A summary of some of the security fixes that have gone into non-bundled MediaWiki extensions will also follow later. As a reminder, MediaWiki 1.35 became end of life (EOL) in December 2023, MediaWiki 1.40 became EOL in June 2024 and MediaWiki 1.41 became EOL in December 2024. MediaWiki 1.42 becomes EOL at the end of June 2025. MediaWiki 1.39 (the old LTS before 1.43) becomes EOL in November 2025. It is strongly recommended to upgrade to 1.43 (the next LTS after 1.39), which will be supported until December 2027. [1] https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Version_lifecycle

New version of Canasta for MediaWiki 1.43
by Yaron Koren 25 Jun '25

25 Jun '25

Hello, We are pleased to announce that version 3.0 of the MediaWiki distribution Docker image Canasta has been released, which includes MediaWiki 1.43. (Canasta only supports LTS MediaWiki versions, so the version included before was 1.39.) Other improvements and additions in this new Canasta version include: - Much of the code was split off into a separate Docker image, "CanastaBase", making it much easier to create a Canasta-based MediaWiki distribution that holds a different set of extensions and skins (or other changes). - The Postfix utility was added, allowing for email support out-of-the-box. - Direct usage of the "Recommended Revisions" listings ( https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Recommended_Revisions) for the set of extensions and skins, which is hopefully a further step toward a standardization of these listings as a sort of best practices resource. You can read more about, and download, Canasta here: https://canasta.wiki/ You can also read more about it on mediawiki.org: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Canasta -Yaron and the other Canasta developers -- WikiWorks · MediaWiki Consulting · http://wikiworks.com
