Recent parser change regarding tildes in comments?
by Thomas Dalton 28 Feb '26

28 Feb '26

Has the parser just been changed with regards to tildes (~~~~) inside HTML comments? It appears they used to be ignored, and are now suddenly being replaced en masse the next time someone edits the page (and can't be easily reverted - it just changes the sig to the reverter's instead). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_creation/2006-06-02-ear… for an example.

RE: [Mediawiki-l] Re: How to create a new Special page
by Bart Q. Simon 26 Nov '25

26 Nov '25

I distinctly remember there was a way to add a title to a special page simply by entering in a URL, then adding the title to the wiki edit field, and then saving. The new "writing a new special page" how-to is very confusing - and it wants me to write PHP to get the title to show up. There was an easier way... I can't find this how-to anywhere- though I'm sure it used to exist. FX can you walk me through how you've added a wiki page title to a special page? Thanks! -----Original Message----- From: mediawiki-l-bounces(a)Wikimedia.org [mailto:mediawiki-l-bounces@Wikimedia.org] On Behalf Of Rick DeNatale Sent: Thursday, May 19, 2005 2:33 PM To: MediaWiki announcements and site admin list Subject: Re: [Mediawiki-l] Re: How to create a new Special page On 5/13/05, FxParlant <f-x.p(a)laposte.net> wrote: > Hello; > There is a paragraph on how to create a special page in the FAQ > > > http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:FAQ#How_do_I_add_my_own_dynamic_cont ent_to_MediaWiki.3F > > It's not so difficult. I just figured out how to build a new special page which is like the Uncategorized pages page, but looks at the Image namespace. Are there any good resources for writing scripts and gadgets
by Arcane 21 25 Nov '25

25 Nov '25

I'm currently trying to adapt several gadgets that are meant for wikis using the Monobook/Vector skins to the Monaco skin, and so far, I've managed to successfully port over the UTC Clock gadget and Sandbox page gadget to Monaco, but aside from those I've been having trouble since, frankly, my knowledge of Javascript/JQuery is slim and I'm not familiar with all the variables used in writing user scripts. I've fairly decent with CSS style sheets, but I still need help with Javascript, so does anyone know of some good resources I could look into, preferably tailored for writing scripts on MediaWiki? Also, if anyone wants to see what I have done so far (and have released publicly), the wiki I have been testing my live gadget/user script code on is here: https://mediawikitesters.orain.org/wiki/Main_Page

OpenID Connect extension and redirect_uri
by Scott Koranda 30 Nov '16

30 Nov '16

Hello, I am using MediaWiki version 1.27.1 with the OpenID Connect extension detailed at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:OpenID_Connect I have configured the extension and when I click on "Log in" I am taken to https://myserver.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin&returnto=My+Test%3… There I click on "Log in with PluggableAuth" and I am redirected to the OIDC OP as I expect. I noticed, however, that when the extension computes the redirect_uri parameter that it includes when it redirects the browser to the OP it is redirect_url=https%3A%2F%2Fmyserver.org%2Fw%2Findex.php That surprises me. I would have thought that the redirect_uri would be to a page where MediaWiki can consume the authorization code that is returned by the OP. After I authenticate with the OP it redirects the browser back to the redirect_uri with an authorization code and the correct state but then MediaWiki just returns a '200 OK' and the main page of the wiki. It naively appears to me that the redirect_uri being sent to the OP is not correct, but I do not see a way to configure the extension to override it, and I would not know what value to use. I appreciate any input people have on what I might be doing wrong, or how I can further troubleshoot. Thanks, Scott K

[request for help] Error "Error creating thumbnail: Invalid thumbnail parameters" when viewing some images
by Martin Urbanec 26 Nov '16

26 Nov '16

Hi, I'm still getting strange error "Error creating thumbnail: Invalid thumbnail parameters" for some images at bomosil.eu. You can see an example at http://www.bomosil.eu/index.php?title=Soubor:Jihlava_-_zemska_hranice_Cech_… . As you can see I use version 1.23.15. The image itself can be find at http://www.bomosil.eu/images/4/4f/Jihlava_-_zemska_hranice_Cech_a_Moravy_v_… . I tried to change $wgMaxImageArea to 10e7 (and higher). The error did not show anymore. But there was a blank screen instead of it. No warning, no error message, nothing. Also when I visit Special:Upload I get a warning "Warning: hash_equals(): Expected user_string to be a string, NULL given in /data/web/virtuals/27056/virtual/www/includes/GlobalFunctions.php on line 135". I don't know if this is interesting. I also tried to upload the file at another wiki with success as you can see at http://urbanecmwiki.8u.cz/w/index.php?title=Soubor:Jihlava_-_zemska_hranice…. The only one change which I made was that I changed wgMaxImageArea to bigger value. But this does not work in this case. Could anybody help me with this? The best, Martin Urbanec

Phabricator tags: patch-for-review and WMF-deploy-*
by Huji Lee 24 Nov '16

24 Nov '16

Hi all, I have two questions regarding Phabricator tags: 1) When a task is closed as resolved (by merging a patch), are we supposed to leave the patch-for-review tag or remove it? 2) Today on two occasions I noticed that a patch was merged and a task was closed, yet ReleaseTaggerBot did not add the WMF-deploy-... tag to it. I added it by hand [1][2] but wanted to make sure if that is fine and why the bot didn't do it. Thanks, Huji [1] https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T147136 [2] https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T151513

PHP fatal error and LdapAuthenticationPlugin
by scar 22 Nov '16

22 Nov '16

I'm having a problem logging into my mediawiki account on our local server. Other users are able to login normally. I didn't setup the mediawiki but have taken over administration of it as well as the local servers. It uses the LdapAuthenticationPlugin to authenticate with our LDAP user database. When i try to login using my LDAP user/pass, i just see a blank page with no errors (if i use an invalid password then i receive normal error about wrong password). On the server the mediawiki is running on, this is what shows up in the httpd/access_log after i click the "Log in" button: IP-addr - - [08/Nov/2016:14:40:30 -0700] "POST /index.php?title=Special:UserLogin&action=submitlogin&type=login HTTP/1.1" 500 - "https://host/index.php/Special:UserLogin" "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/45.0" and this is what shows up in the httpd/error_log: [Tue Nov 08 14:40:30 2016] [error] [client IP-addr] PHP Strict Standards: Declaration of LdapAuthenticationPlugin::modifyUITemplate() should be compatible with AuthPlugin::modifyUITemplate(&$template, &$type) in /var/www/html/extensions/LdapAuthentication/LdapAuthentication.php on line 118, referer: https://host/index.php/Special:UserLogin [Tue Nov 08 14:40:30 2016] [error] [client IP-addr] PHP Strict Standards: Declaration of LdapAuthenticationPlugin::setPassword() should be compatible with AuthPlugin::setPassword($user, $password) in /var/www/html/extensions/LdapAuthentication/LdapAuthentication.php on line 118, referer: https://host/index.php/Special:UserLogin [Tue Nov 08 14:40:30 2016] [error] [client IP-addr] PHP Strict Standards: Declaration of LdapAuthenticationPlugin::addUser() should be compatible with AuthPlugin::addUser($user, $password, $email = '', $realname = '') in /var/www/html/extensions/LdapAuthentication/LdapAuthentication.php on line 118, referer: https://host/index.php/Special:UserLogin [Tue Nov 08 14:40:30 2016] [error] [client IP-addr] PHP Strict Standards: Declaration of LdapAuthenticationPlugin::initUser() should be compatible with AuthPlugin::initUser(&$user, $autocreate = false) in /var/www/html/extensions/LdapAuthentication/LdapAuthentication.php on line 118, referer: https://host/index.php/Special:UserLogin [Tue Nov 08 14:40:31 2016] [error] [client IP-addr] PHP Fatal error: Call to a member function toString() on a non-object in /var/www/html/includes/User.php on line 3639, referer: https://host/index.php/Special:UserLogin

Special:Upload & MediaWiki:Uploadtext
by Dan 21 Nov '16

21 Nov '16

Hi. Is it enough just to create the page [[MediaWiki:Uploadtext]] to have it's content displayed on [[Special:Upload]]? I ask because I encountered such a problem on a non-WMF wiki. Page [[MediaWiki:Uploadtext]] was created with a custom content, but [[Special:Upload]] remains intact, unchanged. This happened on Wargaming Wiki - http://wiki.wargaming.net Related pages: http://wiki.wargaming.net/en/Special:Upload http://wiki.wargaming.net/en/MediaWiki:Uploadtext You'll need probably to create an account there to check this yourself. But you can see also this short video I've recorded, which is demonstrating the issue: http://www53.zippyshare.com/v/qSVnbq9c/file.html (I tried to attach it to a mail but there appeared problems with the size of mail+attachment). Can someone tell me what's wrong here and how it can be debugged? Thank you in advance. Dan

Save the Date: EMWCon Spring 2017
by Cindy Cicalese 20 Nov '16

20 Nov '16

The Enterprise MediaWiki Conference Spring 2017, or EMWCon Spring 2017, will be held Wednesday to Friday, March 8-10, 2017, in McLean, VA, USA, a suburb of Washington, DC. EMWCon Spring 2017 will be a three-day conference featuring discussions of topics related to "Enterprise MediaWiki", i.e. the usage of MediaWiki software by and within companies, non-profits, governments, and other organizations. There will be two days of talks followed by a one day Create Camp. The intended audience of EMWCon Spring 2017 is anyone who uses, or would like to learn more about, MediaWiki within organizations. Suggested topics for talks include: - Examples of use of MediaWiki in organizations - Lessons learned and challenges in the use of MediaWiki and MediaWiki extensions in organizations - Gamification and other incentives for wiki contributions - Wikitext patterns and wiki design patterns - Wiki development frameworks - MediaWiki extension usage and development - New extensions, extension updates, and ideas for future extensions This is the second EMWCon, after EMWCon Spring 2016 last year. EMWCon began as a spinoff of the Semantic MediaWiki Conference, or SMWCon, which is an annual conference, held in the fall in Europe. EMWCon and SMWCon are not that different from one another: they are both three-day events, and, despite EMWCon's broader scope, the overall topics of discussion tend to be similar. For more information about the conference, please visit the conference wiki page at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/EMWCon_Spring_2017. EMWCon Spring 2017 will be located at MITRE, a not-for-profit organization that manages Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) sponsored by the US federal government.

Question on files comments
by Jeremi Plazas 15 Nov '16

15 Nov '16

Hey there, We are using a bot to upload images to a wiki. It would seem that when we decide to upload a “new version” of a particular file (importing a new file over an existing file), mediawiki keeps the original “Comments” (Categories and the like…) that were specified in the original upload, even if new categories were specified in the latest upload. See the following link for what I mean: http://terdzod.tsadra.org/index.php/File:RTZ-Tsagli-KA-02-kar_gling_zhi_khr… Notice that the latest upload had a Category:Tsaglis added to it. But somehow that category isn’t enabled or active. Any clues? Any default setting in MW that keeps the original comments? Can it be changed? Or does it probably have to do with the custom bot we’re using? Thanks so much, https://htmlsig.com/t/000001C1QAGY Jeremi Plazas / Assistant Director of Research mailto:jeremi@tsadra.org Tsadra Foundation http://www.tsadra.org https://htmlsig.com/t/000001C0EJDS https://htmlsig.com/t/000001C7A26X https://htmlsig.com/t/000001C8GCJY https://htmlsig.com/t/000001C41CGG https://htmlsig.com/t/000001C6EAVP https://htmlsig.com/t/000001C0QFPM http://www.tsadra.org

Re: [MediaWiki-l] Revision deletion timestamp
by Kartik Kumar Perisetla 13 Nov '16

13 Nov '16

Hi, I was going through the wikipedia dumps [ https://dumps.wikimedia.org/enwiki/20161020/] and found that the file enwiki-20161020-stub-meta-history1.xml.gz <https://dumps.wikimedia.org/enwiki/20161020/enwiki-20161020-stub-meta-histo…> contains all revision metadata. The timestamp field in 'revisions' table is for time when revision was created and the field 'rev_deleted' indicates that this revision was deleted. My question is- Where can I find the timestamp at which this revision was deleted ? Could you please provide some inputs on where to find the time at which a revision was deleted using dumps ? Thanks! Kartik

Individual page CSS sheets?
by Bart Humphries 09 Nov '16

09 Nov '16

How would I set up individual CSS sheets for individual pages? Maybe page/css for each page, then I could add a CSS tab to all the pages? Also, how would I go about applying a stylesheet to every page in a particular category? [[Category:X]] = stylesheet1 [[Category:Y]] = stylesheet2 [[Category:X]][[Category:Y]] = stylesheet1 & stylesheet2 So then you'd have (in order) default site/skin CSS, category CSS, page CSS, user CSS. 404 Not Found when moving to a new server
by Jingyi C. Shi 08 Nov '16

08 Nov '16

Dear all, I want to move my MediaWIki site to a new server. All the Ubuntu version, MySQL version, and PHP version are changed. After modifying the LocalSettings.php a little bit, now I can connect to the site via web browser but it shows errors of 404 Not Found. For example, when I go to "http://MyIPAddress/wiki/index.php", the page shows: Not Found The requested URL /wiki/index.php was not found on this server. So, how to address this issue? I have tried "php maintenance/update.php" but it didn't work. Looking forward to your help. Thank you all! Best, Jingyi

Wiki-site.com is a wiki hosting company, listed at https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Starting_and_Running_a_Wiki_Website/Hosted_Wi… Their "Support Contact" page [1] for paid wikis says: "For wiki management support, we've created a forum at the following address" (links to THIS list!!) Rami Addady, if you're listening, at least you should say something like "You can get help from the amazing community of MediaWiki software users and developers at their public discussion list" NOT "We've created a forum" What do you think? I've often wondered why some list questions seem like people are "demanding" support. Now I know it's because some companies literally tell their customers that this is their support desk.
