Recent parser change regarding tildes in comments?

Has the parser just been changed with regards to tildes (~~~~) inside HTML comments? It appears they used to be ignored, and are now suddenly being replaced en masse the next time someone edits the page (and can't be easily reverted - it just changes the sig to the reverter's instead). I distinctly remember there was a way to add a title to a special page simply by entering in a URL, then adding the title to the wiki edit field, and then saving. The new "writing a new special page" how-to is very confusing - and it wants me to write PHP to get the title to show up. There was an easier way... I can't find this how-to anywhere- though I'm sure it used to exist. FX can you walk me through how you've added a wiki page title to a special page? Are there any good resources for writing scripts and gadgets

I'm currently trying to adapt several gadgets that are meant for wikis using the Monobook/Vector skins to the Monaco skin, and so far, I've managed to successfully port over the UTC Clock gadget and Sandbox page gadget to Monaco, but aside from those I've been having trouble since, frankly, my knowledge of Javascript/JQuery is slim and I'm not familiar with all the variables used in writing user scripts. I've fairly decent with CSS style sheets, but I still need help with Javascript, so does anyone know of some good resources I could look into, preferably tailored for writing scripts on MediaWiki? File descriptions aren't fetched

Hi, I'm running multiple language wikis and one pool wiki. The problem is that no file descriptions are fetched in the language wikis although $wgFetchCommonsDescriptions is set to true. subskin customizations

In an old vector based skin on a 1.16 version of MW, the skin author added custom html and css directly into the skin.php code to add a custom header above the personal tools links. Where do I put that code in a vector subskin in MW 1.22? Do I add it directly to myskin.php again, or to myskin.skin.php? Do I separate the html and css and add the html to myskin.skin.php and the css to screen.css? Thanks Bill

Table issues

I am & have been seeing these little glitches for some time. I actually have never been able to get rid of them. </td></tr></table></td></tr></table> They show up randomly through out my mediawiki site sometimes in boxes, & sometimes just in headers or actual pages. Sometimes they are complex, sometimes not </td></tr> Any tips on fixing this are really appreciated. john

New extensions from Vistaprint

At Vistaprint (www.vistaprint.com), we have an extensive internal wiki, and over the last six years, my team has built 50+ custom MediaWiki extensions. I'm happy to announce that we are starting to release these extensions as open source. They range from very small (see below) to quite powerful & unique. To help us get familiar with Wikimedia's Git/Gerrit process, we're beginning with a very small but useful extension: CategoryTagSorter. It simply alphabetizes the category links displayed in articles. (Normally they appear in the same order written as in the wikitext.) It has been called "the simplest useful MediaWiki extension" and was written originally by Dan Barrett (User:Maiden_taiwan, also author of the O'Reilly MediaWiki book). Edit talk pages but not anything else

Is there a way to give users permission to edit talk pages but not the main pages? The only extension I found is no longer maintained. I want to give regular users permissions to read the main page and then make comments on the talk page, but not edit the main page.

Use of Amazon EC2 and S3 with MediaWiki

Hi everyone, Does anyone here have experience running MediaWiki on AWS using S3 for file uploads? If so, could you please let me know what extensions you are using and perhaps provide your configs? I, and everyone else who has looked at our site, is having difficulty wrapping our head around how the AWS extension works. We haven't gotten it working, nor have we gotten LocalS3Repo to work. Our goal is to have MediaWiki uploads sent directly to S3 and served through S3 without going through our EC2 instances to save IO and bandwidth. Could someone help us out? This is a notice that on Tuesday, Jan 28th between 21:00-22:00 UTC (1-2pm PST) Wikimedia Foundation will release critical security updates for current and supported branches of the MediaWiki software and extensions. Downloads and patches will be available at that time, with the git repositories updated soon after. The vulnerable feature is not enabled in MediaWiki by default, however many sites will want to upgrade as soon as the patch is available.

Hi, I would like to allow users to be able to enter their social networking handles (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) into their user profiles so I can then show them on their user page or along with an article they create. Collapseable sidebars dont collapse?

diffs between two articles

Is anyone aware of an extension that would allow a user to view the differences between two articles? We are using mediawiki for user manuals. The articles themselves are similar across a family of models, with the major differences being images and a small amount of text in each article. Over time, revisions diverge the articles, and cross-referencing a 150 page manual by hand across 5 models is quite time consuming. I'd like to be able to run a diff, similar to the article history, except between articles so I could easily pick up on the changes between articles.

WorkingWiki [1] is not a lightweight tool, and needs you to be assertively in control of your site's security, but can definitely do this. John, I don't know of a simple way to do that without writing some "glue" code. However, I am using the SQL2Wiki extension (heavily modified) to maintain data in MySQL (using MyPhpAdmin) and display it in MediaWiki. Due to the possibility of SQL injection, I do not recommend this for open wikis. I only have trusted users, plus I protect pages with SQL on them, and restrict permissions to SELECT only on the user role that has access from MediaWiki. Although I don't use it, it is possible to automagically go MySQL <--> Excel using Connector/ODBC. How to set font size and type for display and not for print

The title pretty much says it all. I have a wiki that's used as a manual; we both read it on line and print it. I need to set the font type and size for display only, and not for print; the rendering software has its own default settings for printing. I know this has to go somewhere in the css but I'm not sure what I need to put where.
