I distinctly remember there was a way to add a title to a special page simply by entering in a URL, then adding the title to the wiki edit field, and then saving. The new "writing a new special page" how-to is very confusing - and it wants me to write PHP to get the title to show up. There was an easier way... I can't find this how-to anywhere- though I'm sure it used to exist. FX can you walk me through how you've added a wiki page title to a special page? Recent parser change regarding tildes in comments?

Has the parser just been changed with regards to tildes (~~~~) inside HTML comments? It appears they used to be ignored, and are now suddenly being replaced en masse the next time someone edits the page (and can't be easily reverted - it just changes the sig to the reverter's instead). Link backups? Archive links (webcitation, archive.org) with an extension?

Hi, you know, links break after time... Thats why many wikis use services such as webcitation. Is there some non-experimental extension, which automatically creates backups of links using either webcitation, archive.org or similar services? Or some doing some other kind of backup, such as screenshot the page or storeing the page? (The ArchiveLinks extension [1] looks very well, serving exactly this purpose, but its really stresses, not to use in in production wiki.) Upload file issues with mw1.21.1

Hello, I apologize for posting this as I did post it earlier, but I am at a total loss as to what the problem may be, so I am pleading for help. I upgraded from 1.16 to 1.21 and then 1.21.1. Ever since upgrading from 1.16, I can no longer upload files. It is not a permission or ownership issue, as all directories/sub-directories/files all the way down through and including each parent directory "/var/www/html/wiki/images" have root as owner and group and everything is set for 777. I am trying to update from 1.16.1 to 1.21.1 on a hosted site to which I do not have command line access. I have installed the 1.21.1 files, copied over my images directory, LocalSettings.php that was carefully tested on a local PC with updated extensions, etc. I ran the update on the local PC to uncover the extension issues, etc, and that worked fine. I have edited my .htaccess files to disable mod_rewrite so that I could navigate to the update script. I did not overwrite my 1.16.1 files, I made a new directory for the new files and renamed it to w after renaming my "w" to "w1.16.1" php Error reporting is set to E_ALL I set max_execution_time to 1200 !!!! When I run : mydoc_root/w/mw-config/index.php5 I get a totally empty page and the navigation bar says : mydoc_root/w/mw-config/index.php5?page=ExistingWiki But there is no sign that anything is happening. No error message, no progress bar, no clock, no hourglass, nada. If I hit 'Back' I can get a "do you want to restart your installation " screen, but this gets me no further. Disabling object cache completely not working

Wiki upgrade without command line access

I'm getting ready to upgrade our (hosted) corporate wiki from 1.161.1 to 1.21.1. I have done an upgrade using the web interface on a local copy of our wiki - this worked fine. The docs suggest that with a "large" wiki this could fail due to timeouts, that the command line upgrade script is preferred, and that if you don't have command line access you should change hosting providers to one that allows command line access. Changing hosts is not always an option, but it seems to me that you ought to be able to upgrade the DB on a local machine, using the command line script if necessary, then import that new DB structure (and data) on your host. Has anyone tried this, and is there some reason it does not/would not work? Also, I have found that although I don't have command line access, I can run php scripts as cron jobs. Is there any reason the upgrade script could not be run this way? For example, is there any point at which the upgrade script requires/requests user input? I have not yet tried to upgrade our hosted wiki, and I think it's likely that the web interface will work fine, I just want to be aware of all possible safety nets in case problems do arise. Parser cloning

Recently I encountered what I thought was a bug in my code, but it turned out to be something much more interesting. First, some background: Here at Vistaprint we have a number of custom extensions written for our internal-documentation wiki. One of those categorizes articles programmatically - you call it from the code and it will auto-categorize the page. Something along the effect of: $c = new Categorizer; $c->addToCategory( 'my-message-key' ); Whenever this code was called it broke the Cite extension. Specifically, anything defined with <ref></ref> would not show up in the <references /> section below. Doing some digging I found this issue: 1. Our custom extension parsed a message in the middle of a page (while the page was being parsed in the code) 2. Parsing a message called MessageCache::parse, by way of wfMessage() and the Message object 3. The MessageCache object clones the global parser and parses the message 4. Parsing the message means that the (cloned) parser calls Parser::clearState The problem is that calling Parser::clearState() on the cloned parser object (a property of MessageCache) also clears the state of the global parser object. This might be due to two things: 1. PHP makes shallow-copies of objects when cloning and not deep-copies [1]. 2. When the Cite extension inserts itself into a parser it sets up a callback to the 'ParserClearState' hook. When this callback is run, because of #1 (no deep-copying) it effectively gets run for all clones of the parser. This is arguably a bug in MediaWiki: cloning a parser does not create a totally separate object with its own state. I have found a number of bug-reports that seem to be related to this issue [2][3][4]. Before I go off and submit a bunch of code, I'd like the input from the community. Total novice to Javascript, need help parsing a JSON query to my test wiki.

I'm an administrator of a wiki on Wikia, and I've been trying to convert a gadget script we use to see what alternate redirects can be used for a page (they display in small text on the first header) so it will work on my private test wiki. My problem is that I'm not sure what I'm doing to be honest, as I'm an utter novice at JSON queries and how to parse them. Basically, I was wondering if someone could take a look at the below link to the original gadget script and tell me how I can convert it to my test wiki, so it will have the same behavoir it does on Wikia and work on all basic MediaWiki skins like Monobook and Vector. Impressions from LODLAM 2013

I'm just back from the LODLAM summit in Montreal, Canada and here there is a short report. ==About LODLAM and why I was there== LODLAM (http://lodlam.net) is a gathering of people interested in LOD (linked open data) and LAM (Libraries, Archives, and Museums), so I thought it would be interesting to find partners and raise awareness about the Wikisource revitalization effort, all this thanks to the Grants:IEG support. The audience was very diverse, not only from cultural institutions, but also from some research centers and private companies. OKFN, Europeana, DPLA, and other big players had representatives there. AFIK, I was the only person from the Wikimedia movement, so I ended up representing "all things wiki", specially Wikidata. These spontaneous activities are briefly described here [1]. The format of the event was that of an [[open-space technology]] gathering, similar to unconferences. Some information and reflexions to share: == Rewards & contributor retention == During a talk about licenses (which dealt about the difficulties of having content with different licenses), there were some mention about Datahub [2], a recently launched project to share datasets, formerly known as ckan. The discussion revolved around the reward that contributors get for releasing their datasets. There was some consensus that "the use of the released data is the reward", which lead to another debate about how to convey data use to contributors. It can be complicated or simplified to just leave a gratitude comment by the person using the dataset. All this led me to think about the emotional vs rational rewards that users (or institutions) obtain from contributing content to Wikipedia, Commons, Wikisource, etc. Are really "active thanks", as currently implemented, suistainable and scalable? Will all the contributors who deserve it get a thanks some day? Could personalized view counts/ratings reports about uploaded pictures, major contributions to WP articles, etc. have some impact on contributor satisfaction/retention? Would "automated personal impact reports" free collaborators from the duty of thanking one another, or would that mean less personal interactions? These are some questions that I leave open here. ==Semantic annotations == As you might know there is a GSoC [3] which aims to convert the OKFN Annotator [4] into a Mediawiki extension. That is a great project that will enable inline comments in mediawiki projects, but it shouldn't be seen as the end, but only an step in the direction of semantic annotations. What could semantic annotations mean for Wikipedia? More precise answers to questions. Instead of just having "millions of articles" there would be the possibility of answering "trillions of questions" (or at least pointing to the text fragment(s) that has/have the answer). This kind of paradigm shift might need some pondering and broad community discussion. What could semantic annotations mean for Wikisource? Text interconectedness. Be able to relate concepts, authors, fragments... and then be able to query those relationships. ==Input interfaces for linked data== The best linked data it is the one that is invisible to the user, but then, how to enable end users to "write" linked data? From the several approaches, the most convincing seemed to use a text symbol (#, +, !, or others) to indicate that the text following it represents a linked entity. In the case of the VisualEditor in Wikipedia, one could write "#article_name", and right after entering the "#" and the first letters, a list of options (from Wikidata) would show up to autocomplete/disambiguate. After selecting the right item, one could continue writing or type a dot to select a property (like in some object-oriented programming languages do). Pre upgrade testing of mw 1.21.1 with php 5.3.10 and apache 2.4.4 I set display_error = off in a php.ini in the doc root, and ran phpinfo to confirm that it actually was set to "off", but extension automaticREMOTE_USER is still giving me a Strict Standards error for getCanonicalName(). I've used this extension for years, and can live with the fact that's it has not been updated recently, but I don't want error messages cluttering up the page. What have I missed? Hello, I upgraded from 1.16 to 1.21 and now 1.21.1 I am running the latest MW(see below). Installed software Product Version MediaWiki 1.21.1 PHP 5.3.8 (apache2handler) MySQL 5.1.60 Entry point URLs Entry point URL Article path /mediawiki-1.21.1/index.php/$1 Script path /mediawiki-1.21.1 index.php /mediawiki-1.21.1/index.php api.php /mediawiki-1.21.1/api.php load.php /mediawiki-1.21.1/load.php After the upgrade from 1.16, if I attempt to upload a file, I get the error: Could not create directory "mwstore://local-backend/local-public/5/54". In LocalSettings.php: $wgEnabledUploads = true; I have changed persmissions to 777 all the way down to "/var/www/html/wiki/images". I have also changed owner/group to root, apache, and both users to no avail. Has anyone had this problem and have it not be a permissions/ownership issue(s)? Any help would be most appreciated. Lua: Maintain state between invokes?

Hi, I am struggling with Lua. Is there a way to somehow maintain the state of the page building between calls to #invoke? A kind of page-wide variable mechanism or something like that? Problem: I have what is basically a bugtracker where each bug is described on a wiki page. For each state change of the bug (new, confirmed, fixed, verified, closed) I add a call to a template to the page text. The problem is, that the text generated by the template depends on both the origin and the target state. Until now I used the variables extension to keep track of the current state. Now I want to convert to Lua. Apart from the fact that it is clearly not desirable to mix the use of the variables extension and Lua, it is also impossible: When Scribunto's #invoke is called, parser functions are already parsed. Our installation is behind a corporate firewall - pear/email not working

Hi, We have 1.20.6 of MediaWiki up and running. All working fine except email. I tried installing PEAR2 (pyrus.phar) and I couldn't. I then did so on a computer not behind a firewall and it installed fine. So I copied the installation over to the computer behind the firewall. It reports that the packages are installed (the ones I installed on the other computer). But I cannot install new ones or channels. I have tried setting up an http_proxy. It seems to run OK (the setting of the proxy), but I still cannot install channels or packages. Media Wiki gives an error every time it tries to send an email too. Is it possible to get working behind a corporate firewall? If so how? With Upgrade, custom skin question

I'm about to upgrade from 1.16.1 to 1.21.1 on a private corporate wiki and am testing things out on a local PC before upgrading the (hosted) production server. We had a custom skin which made only trivial changes to monobook - in MonoBookTemplate, in the "contents" section, it checked for certain categories in catlinks (things like "Not supported"), and if those existed put up a Big Red Notice at the top of the page. In 1.16.1 I had renamed MonoBook.php to our skin name, and internally had renamed $skinname, $stylename, and other things to match. This worked as expected. In 1.21.1, if I simply insert my own code into MonoBook.php, it works as expected, but no combination of renaming variables and files seems to work. I'm clearly missing some relationship between them. I can leave it named "MonoBook" with the customization, but obviously this is asking for trouble down the road when someone else needs to do another upgrade. Is there a comprehensive list or can someone tell me what I need to rename? I have looked at the tutorial on skinning, but that seems to be more for "from scratch" rather than modifying an existing skin and does not spell this out. I'm also going through a 1.16 to 1.21. upgrade and ran into this. Be sure to chmod -R so that the permissions change all the way down to and below images. I'm 92.7% sure this has to be a permissions issue, not something else. ConfirmAccount not working.

Hi All, I just installed the extension "ConfirmAccount". Hi, We have MediaWiki set up on a Windows Server 2008 VM. I have been unsuccessful in getting emails working. I have: 1. Added the following to our LocalSettings.php $wgSMTP = array( 'host' => "xxxxxx", // could also be an IP address. There isn't much documentation apart from the scripts that create a release for creating a MediaWiki release. As a result, there were some failures that could have been avoided -- branching the extensions at the same time core was branched, for example. To improve the process for any future releases, we need to document the process. Hi, We recently migrated the underlying database from SQLite to MySQL. Pages that we have edited since can be searched for. But searches fail to fins any other pages (except exact title matches). Rather than manually making edits to all pages, is there another way of getting all pages to be included in a search? Clicking images and redirecting

Hello, I am trying to do something where I can redirect the user to different pages on the parts of the picture they select. So is it possible to do this on a single picture or would I need different pieces of the picture and attach each picture as a hyperlink? If I need to do it in pieces (second option) what would be the best way to stitch those pieces so that they appear as a single picture to the user? Is there any other way? Extremely strange parsing error discovered

I just discovered an extremely strange error when parsing the following: ==Advertisements== All one will get when trying to create that section heading will be a blank heading (though any table of contents will show the proper heading. I'm not sure what causes it, and I have verified it exists on MW 1.19, 1.20, and 1.21.

Based on all feedback gathered during the RfC about a possible inter-project links interface [1], User:Tpt has created a content card prototype (image: [2]) To activate it, follow these steps: 1. Go to your common.js file. For a user named "Test" in English Wikipedia, it would be: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Test/common.js 2. Modify it and paste this line: mw.loader.load('// www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=User:Tpt/interproject.js&action=raw&ctyp…' ); 3. Save and go to any Wikipedia page 4. You should see an icon next to the article title, if you don't, refresh your browser cache. *Instructions*: Internet Explorer: hold down the Ctrl key and click the Refresh or Reload button. Firefox: hold down the Shift key while clicking Reload (or press Ctrl-Shift-R). Google Chrome and Safari users can just click the Reload button. What it does: - It displays an icon next to the article title - When you hover your mouse over the icon it shows a *content card*. - The content card displays information from Wikidata: label, image, link to Commons gallery, and link to edit Wikidata. Reunification of Wikisources

Hi Jane, hi Alex, Yes, I agree with you that a centralized Wikisource would be quite meaningful, specially now that projects like Wikidata have shown that it is possible to have both localization and centralization living in harmony. I know that Doug (cc'ed) did some experiments with this goal in mind, but I have no idea how far he is now. Apart from the technical challenge, it also worries me the social aspect. Wikisourcerors from each Wikisource and have lived in isolation from each other for a long time. How would be a reunification perceived by the different communities? Would it be something wanted? Andrea and me have the pending task of contacting the communities, so this is something that we should bring up among other important topics (like the creation of a Wikisource User Group: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_User_Groups) The OPW is a grant program for students similar to Google Summer of Code focused on helping bring more female contributors to open source projects. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreach_Program_for_Women So yes, it is a gendergap project, but we can offer wikisource-related projects as we did with GsoC.
