Template Case Study: Disobiki

Quick intro: I've had a web presence since 1996 and have hosted/used MediaWiki since 2004. I wrote one of the first RSS aggregators (AmphetaDesk) and later lead the call to get Atom named Atom. I've written tech articles for Apple, a year-long magazine column for MacTech, books, blogs, and editing for O'Reilly, and am currently a full-time Drupal developer lead for one of the largest Drupal sites (Examiner.com). I've talked about the differences between Drupal and MediaWiki, and why I chose MediaWiki "going forward", at http://www.disobey.com/node/1866. I was invited to the list by sumanah from #mediawiki, based on my template hacking and my input on mw:Lua_scripting (forthcoming). She figured that someone 'ere might be interested in how I've used templates and how I've solved some of my problems. The wiki in question is the Disobiki at http://www.disobey.com/wiki/. If you read the above post comparing Drupal/MediaWiki, this is my "me" wiki, my brain dump, my interests, my "it's not really a 'site', it's just a digital locker where I keep mah shiznitz." One of the projects I've been working on randomly for years is the "Film Death and Sleaze Index" - that is, a catalog of deaths and sleazes inside genre films. The subject matter, of course, is roughly irrelevant to this discussion, but serves solely to introduce what you might be seeing as you poke around. The latest iteration of an index page is at: http://www.disobey.com/wiki/The_Dead_Hate_the_Living! ---- == AUTOMATICALLY CREATED IMAGE GALLERIES == Granted, Category: does this already and I depend on it too: http://www.disobey.com/wiki/Category:Posters_and_covers http://www.disobey.com/wiki/Category:Posters_and_covers_for_2000 In this case, all my files are named in a specific way such that the filenames function as proper captions to the images. This is just fine for a mass category like this, when the film titles should be displayed next to the image. I also have per-film pages though. Take a look at: http://www.disobey.com/wiki/Snapdragon Here, we're seeing a list of images associated to this film. The film's name is not listed in the caption. We know what film we're on. This image gallery is automatically generated with DPL: <DPL> namespace = File linksto = Snapdragon format = <gallery widths="200px">,%PAGE%|{{FilenameToCaption|%TITLE%|Snapdragon|1993}}\n,,</gallery> </DPL> But, the filenames that worked so nicely in a Category: media display are bad to show here, because the most important information is later on in the filename - whether it's a DVD, a Poster, what language or region it's from, etc. I created {{FilenameToCaption}} to take a filename and munge it so only the important stuff is shown: http://www.disobey.com/wiki/Template:FilenameToCaption It uses nested #replaces from StringFunctions to remove junk bits. == AUTODEFAULTSORT == Another template I've created and is in use on most "type of" pages is: http://www.disobey.com/wiki/Template:AutoDEFAULTSORT It just pushes "A " and "The " to the end of the DEFAULTSORT magic word. It uses RegexFunctions and StringFunctions. == NUMERIC SORTING == And the reason that brought me into #mediawiki this morning: http://www.disobey.com/wiki/Category:Body_counts Category sorting is string-based. Fine. Of course, that caused 1, 20, 21, 2, etc. I couldn't easily solve this by just editing the "Body count: 2" category, because the value of that page is all handled via a simple default-strings/category-setting template. It was a relatively simple fix to get the sort in a more expected way: {{#ifexpr: {{{1}}} > 10 | [[Category:Body counts]] | [[Category:Body counts|Body count:0{{{1}}}]] }} ---- Anyways, those are recent and reusable little templates I've made lately. Article upload issue??

I have a very strange situation. I am building a wiki (mediawiki 1.17) that is devoted to physics. I need to save an article named "General relativity". No matter what I try the article will not save & produce a wiki page. I have even tried saving with only the word 'test' as content..No luck! I have over 150 articles & 800 pluse templates etc. on this site so far & this is the ONLY time this has occurred. I checked the various configs that 'might ' effect this in php, mediawiki, & mysql as far as file sizes ( this one 176 kbs, not large and all text.) Anyone have any ideas? Wikipedia has an article by this exact name so I don't think the name is the issues. More likely 'operator error'. Thanks! frosty

MediaWiki:Common.css and MediaWiki:Monobook.css not working in Firefox and IE

We have recently upgraded from 1.16 to 1.18 but have found that while Chrome is happily using our settings in MediaWiki:Common.css and MediaWiki:Monobook.css, Firefox and IE are not using the settings. Help knowing where to look would be appreciated.

Ghost pages in the wiki

At some point two pages have been created on our wiki with a leading '/'. The mistake was noticed and the page either deleted or renamed - at least a correctly named page to replace each is existing. However, something has been left behind, and the two pages are not only listed as Dead-end Pages, but also can come up in searches. How can we find where the ghost information actually is, and is there any way to get rid of it? We have tried rebuilding indexes. Anne

Multilingual wiki

Hi, What is the best way to set up multilingual capabilities on an existing wiki? I administer a wiki that has gained some international followers, and they’d like to translate it into their own language to help promote it. Searching the mediawiki.org site shows a number of extensions, but none really seem to suit. Ideally, I’d like to have a situation where there is pageX_en and pageX_de, pageX_ru, etc. Are there any recommended practices for setting this up?

"mediawiki 1.18.0 file upload problem" thread resurrection

About two months ago the below thread started and it seemed to fizzle out. http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/mediawiki-l/2011-December/038440.html I am experiencing the same problem and wanted to know if I missed something or if no further exploration occurred. A brief search of the bug tracking system did not seem to produce any open bug reports for this issue, but I figured I would check here first. I will wait to hear any feedback as to the proper venue for any additional information I have observed. Thanks for your time and any help. Greg K.

update version 1.15 to 1.18

FreeMind extension and Mediawiki 1.18.1

Hello, we use FreeMind extension with MediaWiki 1.16.2. which is working without a problem. I tried the extension with MediaWiki 1.18.1 and I get the following error in the PHP error logfile: PHP Fatal error: Class 'Image' not found in FreeMind.php on line 85 This is line 85: $img = Image::newFromTitle($imageTitle); It seems that the class Image doesn't exist anymore in MediaWiki 1.16.2. I didn't found it in den MediaWiki files. The extension itself has not be changed since 2007, so I think no one will make it work for 1.16.2. My questions to the experts: · Is there any other extension which can open FreeMind Files in MediaWiki 1.16.2? · Is someone using this extension with MediaWiki 1.16.2? · Can someone tell me which class I can use instead of the Image class?
