Hi, all,
I am going crazy trying to reset the password for my only administrative user! :( I took the LDAP authentication method that we had in place off-thanks to Ryan and Christine for their advice on this-and then tried to use the "email password" option on the wiki login screen (as the user name "Wikiadmin" doesn't exist in LDAP), and there is no email address associated with the user! (Fail!!!)
I've tried these methods:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:FAQ#How_do_I_reset_a_password.3F
...and the php method gives the error that it can't open the file, and the MySQL methods result in syntax errors. There is no setting for $wgPasswordSalt in my LocalSettings.php file; could this be why the MySQL method is failing?
Any other ideas?
Would the Password Reset extension help? http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Password_Reset
Or, can I associate my email address with the Wikiadmin user directly in the user table in MySQL?
Thanks in advance,
Nina
I'm looking for some advice and you all seem to be pretty enterprising.
Here's a little background...
I am implementing MediaWiki as a catalog for business processes and work
instructions. Because many of the tasks documented are computer-based,
they include many screen shots of the relevant applications. For new
users, these screenshots are often critical to helping them navigate.
If we were only designing this for new users, we would include larger
images inline with the instructions. For experienced users, these
images can be a frustrating distraction as they try to skim through a
process with which they are already familiar for only some details. The
middle ground solution was to include the images as thumbnails on the
right margin. New users can click to view the full sized image and
experienced users can navigate through the process with minimal
disruption by the images.
Here's the challenge...
I have had some feedback that requiring the user to click on the
thumbnail and view the full-size image on a separate page, outside the
context of the task instruction, is not desirable. I agree it is less
than ideal. I have a solution that I know I could implement if I was
designing a web page, but am not sure how to implement this inside
MediaWiki.
The image is reduced to thumbnail size on the page, but when the user
does a mouseover, the image enlarges. An example of this, complete with
the JavaScript, is located here:
http://www.nsftools.com/tips/ImageResize.htm.
I was thinking that this might be doable with a template, but before I
spend a lot of time monkeying around, I wanted to get your advice.
* Do you know how to implement this, or something with a similar
result, using a template or extension?
* Is this something that would be overly difficult to implementing
in MW?
I can't help but think that this functionality would be useful in other
implementations of MW. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Rick Sabatino
Hi Nina,
I don't know how crowded your wiki is, but when you are able to access
localsettings, you are able to change the rights of your '*'-group. You
could create a new account, grant all users to modify any user-rights, grant
your superuser all desired user-groups and then put back the original
settings. This only have to take seconds and I don't think it will cause
much trouble as long as you don't tell people the exact time you'll do this.
Faithfully,
D. (Sumurai8)

Hi, all,
When we first launched our wiki, I had users create their own accounts. I set an account, Wikiadmin, as a Bureaucrat and Sysop. Then, I implemented the LDAP login. Problem is, I can't remember that Wikiadmin account password now, and none of the password reset methods (using the changePassword.php script or directly editing it in MySQL) will work. The user Wikiadmin does not exist in our LDAP/AD environment-although we could create it-and stupidly, it was the only account to which I gave elevated permissions before setting up LDAP.
The only thing I can think of to try is to take off LDAP authentication temporarily, reset the Wikiadmin password, and then put LDAP back. I'm nervous about causing harm by doing this; thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
Nina

Hi,
(1) Does anyone have a a script that runs through $wgUploadPath and
converts the images to a /images/a/ab/foo.jpg structure ?
Someone already asked for this
(http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual_talk:$wgHashedUploadDirectory) and
I searched for it in other places.
Reason: My wiki is growing, about 1000 images now and maybe I should act
better now than later.
(2) A somewhat related question: Is it difficult to create a "commons
wiki" for two existing wikis, simply by following instructions here:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Wiki_family#Scenario_5:_Multiple_wikis…
and then copy recursively both image directories into the new pool wiki?
I don't care if a few images are overwritten by others with the same
name and I also could run the repair script on one wiki to fix wrong
dimensions etc.
Another (stupid) solution would be to mass import images from one to
each other once in a while (I don't have that many images).
Thanx for any tips ! - Daniel
Okay, got this working, *perhaps* because I had used "title" and not
"titles". Thanks to the IRC people ;)
Kind of a shame the error handling here isn't a little more informative.

I currently working on a perl interface to the API (yes, I know one is
available, but it does not provide enough functionality for our
purposes, etc). Anyway, the login goes fine, I get an lgtoken back and
result=Success, but whatever request I make next all that comes back is:
<?xml version="1.0"?><api />
No error, no explanation, nothing. What's up with that? I'm using
HTTP::Cookies to handle the cookie and it does exist, but cookies are
not something I know much about, perhaps there is something more I am
supposed to do?
