I tried the workaround already :-). When an article has 10000+ edits & as the api limits to 500 results per query it takes a long time just to get the count.

There isn't any way to get that in the API right now. A very helpful
solution would be to submit a patch to add it ;) You can look at
includes/actions/InfoAction.php for the implementation of action=info,
and includes/api/ApiQueryInfo.php would probably be the right place to
put it in the API.

As a workaround for number of edits, you could simply use
prop=revisions&rvprop=&rvlimit=max and count the number of revisions
you get back.
