I still need the API to easily fetch some data (links, categories etc) so if I can get the HTML out of it it will be really nice for my application. Is there such an option?

You don't need the API to get the HTML version of an article. You can just
use action=render

Sadly, the search API is not yet supported by the Lucerne search
backend currently
in place on Wikipedia et al.
