returns

      <page pageid="1146669" ns="14" title="Category:Golf">
        <categoryinfo size="51" pages="25" files="1" subcats="25" />
      </page>
    </pages>
  </query>
</api>

-- the fact that there are 25 subcategories.  Now I don't know how to use the API to get those subcategories -- so if someone can figure that out, we'd have an answer!
