You mean to ask whether the fact that the articles are GPLed will
necessitate the client to be GPLed too? I'm pretty sure it doesn't. For
instance, the MediaWiki software is GPLed, which affects changing it
and
distributing it, but not *using* it: it's
perfectly OK to use MediaWiki
to manage non-GPL content (in fact, many non-Wikimedia wikis use a
Creative Commons license). In much the same way, it's OK for non-GPL
programs to query the (GPLed) API.
Note, however, that if the data you get from the API is derived from
GFDL articles, as in the case of Wikipedia, that this data is also
under the GFDL.

My plans for MediaWiki is using it to store XML configuration data and
possible use it for serving tutorials/articles etc to be presented in the
web-application.
