OAuth

Hello all, There's been a fair amount of discussion on the wikitech-l list about oauth, but I realized some people may be here that are not on that list so I'm cross-posting. Since api users are probably one of the most likely groups to use oauth, I wanted to make sure everyone here had a chance to give input on the requirements. We're collecting user stories here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/OAuth/User_stories, and hoping to compile a list of requirements and priorities before the Berlin hackathon. So if you see any uses that are missing from that list, please add it. Or vote for any use cases there that are similar to cases you would use. If you have any projects currently that you would like to use oauth with, please post as many details as possible, so we make sure that the implementation covers as many use cases as we can. Thanks!

Problem with the mobile api

Hi All, >From this morning the mobile api returns a 500 status code error here is the error If you report this error to the Wikimedia System Administrators, please include the details below. PHP fatal error in /usr/local/apache/common-local/php-1.20wmf2/extensions/MobileFrontend/WmlContext.php line 12: Argument 1 passed to WmlContext::__construct() must be an instance of ExtMobileFrontend, none given, called in /usr/local/apache/common-local/php-1.20wmf2/extensions/MobileFrontend/api/ApiParseExtender.php on line 72 and defined here is the url http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=parse&page=Beyond_the_Gates_(disam… I got this error for all the pages I tried. Yesterday I was getting the data, was there a change in the API? When I remove the mobileformat parameter I get the data. Thanks Asher Szmulewicz

Problem with encoding in API answer when many parameters ?

Hi, Very recently (saturday ?) my application, WPCleaner<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:NicoV/Wikipedia_Cleaner/Documentation>, started to behave strangely (report on enwiki<http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk%3ANicoV%2FWikipedia_Cle…> and frwiki<http://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Discussion_utilisateur%3ANicoV%2F…>), without any modfications on my side. I checked what was going on, and it seems that answers from the API have problems with accented characters, like "é". Request for Wikipedia API Format.

Dear Team, I am planning to start a new website containing celebrities from different areas like in sports, movies and politics. For this I am planning to exract data from Wikipedia using API in XML or JSON format. Can someone send me Wikipedia API and the format of response I get? I am pretty much new to this type of technical stuff. I tried going through the document but could not understand much in detail. An example format will be of great use. Thanks in advance. Mobile content: how to get content with the section buttons

Hi All, I am using url like http://en.wikipedia.org//w/api.php?action=parse&format=json&page=New_York_C… I am getting the full content of the mobile page without the buttons: History,Geography,Demographics etc... Is it possible to get the full mobile content with the section buttons? Thanks Asher Szmulewicz

174 more edits the last 180 days than she ever has done

Can you explain this: http://sv.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=userdailycontribs&user=ErfgoedBot&… ErfoedBot has according to this made 6 edits totally on sv.wikipedia, but 140 last 180 days. All these 6 edits are made on one single user-page. Also strange is Perfect: http://sv.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=userdailycontribs&user=Perfect&day… According to this he has made 593 edits totally, and 4584 edits the last 180 days. The typical behavior of Perfect is that he is doing a lot of edits in ns-project and ns-user. Have I missunderstod something about this api? /Ronnie

Are pages in prop queries continuous?

Hi, if I'm making a query using one of the prop modules, can I rely on the fact that all results for certain page will be together in the API pages? In other words, if I find some results for some page on API page n and no results on API page n+1, can I be sure there will be no results on pages > n? Why do I want to know this: I am writing a library to access the API and every collection in my library is lazy. For example, a user requests to know categories of pages in Category:Query languages. When he starts iterating over the result, I execute the query: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&generator=categorymembers&gc… When he then requests to know the categories of the third page in the result (Access query language), I will return to him the categories from the first query. If he requests more, I execute the query: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&generator=categorymembers&gc… This query doesn't give me any new categories for that page. My question is: can I be sure that I won't get any further results for this page, if I continue to increment clcontinue? I think the answer is yes in this specific case, because the first part of clcontinue is pageid, but I am interested in the general answer: does the same apply for all prop modules? Contents of tables with prop=extracts

If I use http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=extracts&titles=Lightwe… or http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=extracts&titles=Lightwe… it gets a plain text extract of a page's main content nicely - but ignores anything inside tables. Is there a way round that? Thanks; Andrew

doc request etiquette best practice`

Hi, I have an application that every five minutes or so comes up with a list of 50-500 Wikipedia individual documents that it wants to request via curl. It wants to get them as quickly and as completely as possible with minimal missed documents or dropped connections. 1) what is the etiquette for how to do this politely? 2) what are the best practice for using curl to submit API requests? * is it best to use a single curl command with a long list of URLs to get, or a long list of individual curl commands? * compressed or not? * retry values? * max-redirs? * other parameters?
