Wikipedia external links API missing expected results

Hi, I'm trying to get the list of external links on pages. I can do this with the API query command, thus: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&titles=Barack%20Obama&prop=… In this case, requesting Barack Obama's links. Also it works well with Einstein: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&titles=Albert%20Einstein&pr… However, another famous physicist, Neils Bohr<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neils_Bohr>, gives me nothing, even though looking at his article, there are several external links. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&titles=Neils%20Bohr&prop=ex… Do you know why this is? getting data for a topic

Hi all, I am new to wikipedia API. can you help me with the following: I want to grep all the content of the "united states of america" to a text file with out images. I am looking a response in text format. How can I do that? looking for: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States page contents. I got this url constructed: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?format=xml&action=query&titles=united_sta… But I am not getting what I want ..:(.may be I am missing some thing basic I did based on http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php.. 1.how can I get the content of what ever string I give in the query? please help me with the url. 2. I am trying to have this in a text file. can I get the response in the text format? other than xml and json? 3. In the unites_states example, I want to get the first coulm of the citys ( Leading population centers ) how can I get that . -pavi

Anti-spam measures for e-mail API?

Greetings, If I'm reading http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:E-mail correctly, there appear to be no (technical) restrictions preventing anybody capable of creating a MediaWiki account from spamming every user with a registered mailing address. Please tell me I'm wrong, and I'm not going to wake up some day to an avalanche of Wikipedia e-mail about Viagra and penis extensions in my inbox? I'm asking because I'm about to add an email operation to my MediaWiki::Gateway Ruby gem, and would prefer that this not be used for evil. Cheers, -jani

[Mediawiki-api-announce] action=upload ignorewarnings behavior change

The behavior of the ignorewarnings parameter in action=upload was changed [1] recently. The ignorewarnings parameter causes an upload to go through even if there were (non-fatal) warnings. Previously, it also removed the warnings from the API output, but with Mark's recent change, these warnings will now be shown. Clients that check for "Success" or "Warning" shouldn't break, but clients that only check for the <warnings> element to see if an upload failed may start failing. This change will be part of the 1.20wmf9 deployment, which will go live on WMF wikis in stages between August 6 and August 13 [2]. Couple of questions about the search API

eg. api.php?action=query&list=search&format=json&srsearch=igor%20stravinsky%20ballet&srprop=score%7Csnippet&srlimit=10 The documentation on the score property says "Adds the score (if any) from the search engine". This would be a very useful property for me to get the relevance of each page to the search string, but it never seems to be returned. Why so? Is there any way I can get the query to return it? Secondly, I'd like the option to search titles only with the addition of the &srwhat=title argument but whenever I try this I get the error result code "srsearch-title-disabled". Is this temporary or permanent? How can I search on titles only?

Performing a text search

I want to search the mediawiki database and get the page with the closest match to my search text. For example, on entering the search string "igor stravinsky persephone" I want to get a link to this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pers%C3%A9phone_%28Stravinsky%29 The following query /w/api.php?action=query&list=search&format=xml&srsearch=igor%20stravinsky%20persephone&srlimit=1 almost gets what I want but the data returns does not include the pageid: Persephone ) is a musical work (mélodrame) for speaker, solo singers, chorus, dancers and orchestra with music by Igor Stravinsky and a ... " size="2500" wordcount="313" timestamp="2012-05-13T07:21:00Z" /> Is this the right way to go about it? Is the title returned a unique ID which I can use to get more detail of the page?

[Mediawiki-api-announce] Changes to continue parameters

Today I approved and merged a change [1] by Brad Jorsch that changes the way continue parameters are used in some API modules. These changes do not break backwards compatibility unless you were doing things you weren't supposed to, but I figured I should announce them anyway. There were a few modules that were using continuations like <query-continue><allcategories acfrom="Foobar" /></query-continue> ; some of these were changed to use a dedicated accontinue parameter instead of reusing acfrom (keeping acfrom, it has a legitimate purpose). This shouldn't be a problem for clients that use values from query-continue verbatim and don't make any assumptions about which parameters will be used for continuations. The following modules are affected: * allcategories (acfrom -> accontinue) * allimages (aifrom -> aicontinue) * alllinks now consistently uses alcontinue instead of alfrom in all cases; previously, alfrom was used in some cases and alcontinue in others * allpages (apfrom -> apcontinue) * filearchive (fafrom -> facontinue) Additionally, the values provided in query-continue will no longer be normalized for presentation, and the values read from the continue parameters will no longer be normalized for database usage. This won't be a problem if you're just passing query-continue values back in verbatim, but it might present problems if you were using continue parameters in hacky ways to jump to certain parts of the result. This change was needed to fix bug 36987[2] and bug 29290 [3]. The following modules and parameters are affected: * allcategories (accontinue) * allimages (aicontinue) * alllinks (alcontinue) * allpages (apcontinue) * categories (clcontinue) * deletedrevs (dlcontinue) * duplicatefiles (dfcontinue) * filearchive (facontinue) * iwbacklinks (iwblcontinue) * iwlinks (iwcontinue) * images (imcontinue) * langbacklinks (lblcontinue) * links (plcontinue) * templates (tlcontinue) * watchlistraw (wrcontinue) This change will be deployed as part of the 1.20wmf8 deployment. This will be deployed to different wikis on different days over the course of the next two weeks, see the deployment schedule [4].
