This email seeks global consensus to develop a tool that helps authors convert :<math into <math display=block. If you have arguments against it, please respond to this email by April 15th or comment on https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T268935.
On the English Wikipedia, there is a CSS stylesheet https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?oldid=1333752946#L-203--L-211 that ensures that :<math and <math display=block usually look the same. Other language wikis don't have this configuration. My suggestion is that each wiki decides for itself whether to use that CSS override. However, I would like to mention that it would be technically possible to enable that for all wikis.

What about legitimately inline formulae?
I am probably missing something; wouldn't that turn the mathml equivalent of $x$ into that of [x]?
