Hi all
I'm pleased to tell you that the servers have been deliverd and installed into the racks. They are awaiting some more setup which should be finished in a week or two.
My question to you is: what shall we call them? Our naming sheme revolves mostly about plants, often poisenous ones. The names used for the current Toolserver boxes can be seen at https://wiki.toolserver.org/view/Servers, names used by the foundation can be seen at http://wikitech.wikimedia.org/view/Server_roles.
There's the OSM toolserver, the DB server and the tile cache to be named. We need suggestions BY FRIDAY. Note that the ultimate decision about the name will be made by the server admins, based on nothing but their vim :)
So... let us know your suggestions!

Boldly ignoring the toolserver's naming scheme, I propose: * Cassini ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%A9sar-Fran%C3%A7ois_Cassini_de_Thury ) * Ortelius ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Ortelius ) * Ptolemy ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ptolemy )
Chosen from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cartographers , where you may find other names you prefer.

Great to hear that they're going online, now we can finally start testing this stuff for real.
Apparently I've been fooled into being one of these server admins for the server, so this means some new tasks, but exciting ones:)

Yay you :)
I have you down for taking care of installing all the osm stuff on the osm-toolserver. Do you also want to deal with the production boxes? I think there was already one or two people designated for that, but honestly, i forget who...
So... for the people who want to admin the production boxes: now is the time to talk to mark and brion about that. That is the foundation's turf and out of my reach. I'm told, however, that granting access there is less problematic than approving toolserver accounts, since there is no access to private user data (except IP addresses, I guess).

As in not-Wikimedia-Deutschland Wikimedia boxes? If so it's nice that that's in the pipeline.
But sure, I'd be willing to poke it. My plan for anything I had to admin was to have a replicable / documented setup that I could check into e.g. github. People could then just send patches if they needed e.g. psql settings changed, or could browse the configs file and yell at the list if something was misconfigured.

All the boxes are in the Netherlands :)
To calrify: there are three OSM boxes, all located at Evoswitch in Haarlem, NL. Two of them (a database and a tile cache) are for production duty. They are run by the Foundation, and only few people will have access. The third box is part of the Toolserver cluster, and run by Wikimedia Germany. A lot of people may get access to this one, and this is the one you admin :)

Reading back a bit, it seems that Sven Anders was designated to be the admin for those boxes. But I expect it would be good if there was more than one OSM person with access to them. All people with Wikimedia shell/root access will be able to access the OSM production boxes too, but they probably won't except for emergencies.
Sven, Please contact Mark and Brion about getting access.
Oh, and Tim Alder is designated to decide who will get access to the OSM Toolserver. Tim, please contact me about this.

If doing admin stuff on the toolserver means setting up accounts for people, I'm probably not best for that. If you need someone to help setup software and databases, that's something I could help with.

No, creating accounts is taken care of, and so is reviewing accounts. Setting up the tools needed for OSM work is what Avar will do - I don't know if he needs help with that. Note that root access at the toolserver needs approval from the Foundation, because it entailes access to private user data.
Root access to the production boxes is also handeled by the foundation, but it's less critical, because it doesn't entail any access to wiki databases. I don't know if Sven would like help with that, please sort that out.
BTW, do you have suggestions for the server names?
