I think you’re right that there is no “solution" on our side, since it’s an issue in the data. Maybe the new internationalized maps will inspire Wikimedians to enrich OSM data with more names in more languages. I hope so!
I would hope that it would be possible to use Wikidata labels for map internalization in a future not so distant, instead of "name:*" tags in OSM. Although I have no idea how to possibly implement such thing in a way which won't be time-costly, it is definitely a way to investigate, because it would not only solve this problem, but enhance the internalization drastically, as WD has many more labels than OSM contain in names [yet I don't have any proofy statistics in hand, just my impression..]
