Hello together,
I would also prefer Berlin. Face-to-face meetings are nice and we have
enough topics to separated it from classical Wikimedia-EU-hackathon.
Lot of points from the priority-list[1] are still open.
New personal points are:
*The move of geo-coordinates to Wikidata is a large project, because we
have to merge coordinates from different languages. Perhaps Wikidata
could support also Geojson, so that we can highlight objects on the map
that are not in OSM. If so we need also an editor for this.
*I believe it's very interesting for Wikipedia what's happen with
historical stuff in OSM[2].
*Also maps related is that WMDE ("Der Verein") works to make public
transport data free available [3], but it's perhaps more a side topic.
*I think a support of Wikipedia-map-workshop[4] with web-tools like
tilemill would be also very interesting.
What I really miss are usability- and design studies to Geohack, WMA,
OSM-Gadget and mobil-maps. Perhaps Foundation can help us there, to make
the applications more professional, and keeping the spirit of volunteers
driven development.
I see in the moment not 20-30 people in this field, but it would be nice
to bring some new people into it.
To motivate new people it's in my eyes necessary to have enough hardware
power and clear admin structures. In the moment it's too confusing.
Greetings Tim alias Kolossos

Hi folks,
it's been a long time coming, but we're finally gearing up for putting
some development effort into an OSM tileservice running in production
to serve Wikimedia sites. This is being driven by the mobile team but
obviously has lots of non-mobile use cases as well, including the
recent Wikivoyage addition to the Wikimedia familiy. This work will
probably not kick off before January/February 2013; before then, the
mobile team is working to finish up the GeoData extension (
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Geodata ).
To get broader community involvement and sync up with existing
volunteer efforts in this area, it'd IMO be useful to plan a
face-to-face meetup/hackfest just focused on geodata/mapping related
development work sometime around Feb/March 2013.
WMF is not going to organize this, but we can help sponsor travel and
bring the key developers from our side who will work on this. Are
there any takers for supporting a 20-30 people development event in
Europe focused on mapping/geodata? I'm suggesting Europe because I
know quite a few of the relevant folks are there, but am open to other
options as well.
Cheers,
Erik
