Hello, yes we have some problems to provide so many styles on Toolserver and delivering also the tiles for the map inside wikipedia. The expiring-rules are not very efficient at medium zoom-levels...so it's difficult to keep the map up-to-date.
To get an up-to-date tile there is a "dirty"-trick: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Slippy_Map#Mapnik_tile_rendering
We have nothing to do with the problems of xapi server fafnir, we have our own problems. We work on this to speed-up the database (I/O-performance). To the "normal" update rate: For the map in Wikipedia I see it not so critical if we have a delay of a month or so, but if editors use a map like lit-map or hikebikemap to control there changes we should have an expire on higher zoom-levels so that we try to be up-to-date.
Greetings Kolossos
BTW: There is also a lit-map from itoworld.com: http://www.itoworld.com/product/data/ito_map/main?view=69&lat=46.951081&... Perhaps this map helps.

Dears,
I'have made in the last months quite a large number of edit on the OSM dtabase, and added the "lit=yes" or "lit = no" tag to many items. The toolserver used to follow my edits although with quite a delay, might be some weeks. But now, there are edits made in february, which are still not up to date on toolserver. I refer here to the page: http://toolserver.org/~osm/styles/?layers=B000F0TF0000F0FFF0000F&zoom=8&... I don't know exacly why, but I've seen on the OSM platform status (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Platform_Status) that the xapi server fafnir is out of disk spaceand that the api is overloaded and out of date.
- Is that the reason why the toolserver is not updated anymore?
- How to solve this issue?
- What it the "normal" update rate of toolserver/lightening layer?
Best regards
Yves, OSM enthusiast
