I am not sure how relevant it is, but it might be of some interest to
the project: Some people from the UK have scanned old (well old for
modern data, not on historical scale ;-)) out-of-copyright paper
Ordenance Survey maps and rectified them into a browsable slippy map.
http://ooc.openstreetmap.org/. Perhaps some of the software stack can
be re-used, although I think most of that was done manually with
offline tools. So depending on the requirements that might not
actually help much.

examples. If
people have more examples feel free to add them to the list.
