The new *North Slope Iñupiaq Dictionary* is now available for free download
from the Alaska Native Language Archive. Comprising nearly 1500 pages, this
work stands as one of the major dictionaries for any Alaska Native
language. While many people have contributed to the dictionary over the
past four decades, work on the completion of the dictionary has been
spearheaded by Dr. Edna Maclean, with funding from a National Science
Foundation grant to Michael Krauss.
The main entries are organized by root, with separate sections for
postbases and endings. Most significantly, the dictionary includes 22
illustrated appendices indicating names for such esoteric terms as compass
winds, parts of the skull, and parts of an igloo. As an example, consider
the following illustration from Appendix 19.

This illustration shows names for the various parts of the whale which can
be shared out. Raised numerals refer to explanatory footnotes which can be
found in the text.
Illustrations such as these make the dictionary a wonderful cultural
resource, something more akin to an encyclopaedia than just a mere
dictionary.

This week, Wikimedia Argentina published the first edition of "Vikipetã
mbo'eha kotýpe" [1], "Wikipedia in the classroom" in Guarani, an indigenous
language spoken in Northern Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia. It is the
first Wikipedia related publication made in an American indigenous language.
The goal of “Wikipedia in the classroom”, made originally in Spanish, is to
help teachers to understand what is Wikipedia, how it works and how they
can use it in an useful way. Most students already use Wikipedia so it is
really important that teachers know what to do.
“Wikipedia in the classroom” is an initiative launched in 2010 by Wikimedia
Argentina with the support of different institutions, including the
Education portal of the Argentine government, educ.ar. They released an
special website about the project.[2] Wikimedia Argentina will print 500
booklets of the Guarani edition to be distributed in schools and other
educational institutions, and we expect to publish new editions in other
indigenous languages in 2013.

Someone at Wikimedia Chile (Osmar, I guess) made a formal request some years ago to change the ISO code, but it was ignored and eventually they replied saying "no".
Changing an ISO language code is complex because it is costly but hey, using something like "mpx" could be a solution acceptable for the Mapuche people. Also, don't we have reserved codes starting with x ?

I'm sure there are others, just some ideas to try. Did anyone submit a
request to the ISO authority? There is no reason an additional code cannot
be added, preserving backwards compatibility, due to the fact that "arn" is
a highly offensive language code.

Ethnologue is the most comprehensive language classification entity in the
world, and it is systematic and subject to intense peer review and inputs.
Because one of the more established terms for Mapudungan is 'Araucano' this
is where the 'arn' comes from. Moreover, Mapudungan (a.k.a. Araucano) is
part of the larger, Araucanian language family. As is often the case,
Mapudungan is related to: Moluche (and/or Ngoluche and Manzanero),
Picunche, and Pehuenche, all within Araucanian.
I do not, for the purposes of efficacy, believe that Wikipedia should
re-invent language codes, already in use, through over a century of
application, developed by Ethnologue. Ethnologue practices open source
principles, providing the world with this classification system (though it
may be imperfect), as well as all their publications and publications known
to them, so the world may retrieve them.

The Wikimedia Language Engineering team is pleased to announce the
first release of the MediaWiki Language Extension Bundle. The bundle
is a collection of selected MediaWiki extensions needed by any wiki
which desires to be multilingual.
This first bundle release (2012.11) is compatible with MediaWiki 1.19,
1.20 and 1.21alpha.

The Universal Language Selector is a must have, because it provides an
essential functionality for any user regardless on the number of
languages he/she speaks: language selection, font support for
displaying scripts badly supported by operating systems and input
methods for typing languages that don't use Latin (a-z) alphabet.
Maintaining multilingual content in a wiki is a mess without the
Translate extension, which is used by Wikimedia, KDE and
translatewiki.net, where hundreds of pieces of documentation and
interface translations are updated every day; with Localisation Update
your users will always have the latest translations freshly out of the
oven. The Clean Changes extension keeps your recent changes page
uncluttered from translation activity and other distractions.
Don't miss the chance to practice your rusty language skills and use
the Babel extension to mark the languages you speak and to find other
speakers of the same language in your wiki. And finally the cldr
extension is a database of language and country translations.
We are aiming to make new releases every month, so that you can easily
stay on the cutting edge with the constantly improving language
support. The bundle comes with clear installation and upgrade
installations. The bundle is tested against MediaWiki release
versions, so you can avoid most of the temporary breaks that would
happen if you were using the latest development versions instead.
Because this is our first release, there can be some rough edges.
Please provide us a lot of feedback so that we can improve for the
next release.

Hoi,
When the Universal Language Selector goes live, it will go live with
support for the "Open-Dyslexic" font [1]. This font supports the Latin
script.
An initial list of some 25 languages has been identified that will be
supported. It includes English, Portueguese, Icelandic to name a few. It
does not support Indonesian, Dutch or Tagalog to name a few others.
I am sure that at least 50 more languages can be supported by the
characters already supported by this font. I understand that the developer
of the font is quite happy to consider for additional characters that will
complete the support for "your" language.
The question is, is your language on the list or can your language be added
to the list [2]. It will be great because it will open up such a treasure
trove of information to dyslectic people. ... ahum the Wikipedia in your
language.
When your language cannot be added to the list at this time, it will be
important to identify the missing characters.
PS I blogged about the subject the last few days ... [3] In my opinion this
is one very important improvement in the usability of MediaWiki.

Hopefully some of you already know about the help page framework that
we have worked on to increase editor engagement in Bangla Wikipedia, a
small Wikipedia. The project report about this help page framework is
now available on Meta so you can now take a look and give us feedback.
You are also encouraged to ask for clarifications if you don't
understand anything clearly.
