Hi folks,

During the #geowebchat Twitter meeting I "met" (as close as you can meet someone on Twitter) a woman who is writing her dissertation about Open Street Maps and the representation of women's health and childcare and related subjects in the open source geo spatial community.

I decided to search, on Open Street Maps, for Planned Parenthood (a (primarily) women's health services non-profit organization located throughout the United States) and had no results. While there are a few results for childcare[1].

For DC, we imported the city's liquor establishment data, which includes liquor stores, pubs, bars, and yes adult establishments.  I tried carefully to make sure we didn't miscategorize any adult establishments as a pub.

I'm not sure the city has a dataset for women's health services, but if they do it would be great to add those also.  There is a dataset for child care in DC but it's 6 years old, probably a bit inaccurate and not a good dataset to import.

That would at least help explain it for DC, but I can't say about other places.

Cheers,
Katie

So, when you search for...strip club you get a nice collection of icons for strip club (NSFW)[2] used as definers. There are no definers for women's health or childcare.

While I should not be surprised, I was disappointed to find this out. Looks like, when my schedule allows it, an OSM street mapping party will have to take place for women's health, history and related subjects!
