*How should the Wikimedia Movement distribute its funds? *The call for the
Global Resource Distribution Committee nominations closes on March 31st.
This decision-making body is looking to improve gender diversity among its
candidates.
----
Hello everyone!
I’m not sure if you’re aware, but the WMF is currently looking for
candidates to form a new global committee – the Global Resource
Distribution Committee
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_Resource_Distribution_Committee/Prop…>
–
which will focus on designing the future resource distribution policy for
the Wikimedia Movement, regarding the Community Fund
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Community_Fund>.
We hope this committee will help us answer questions such as how can the
Wikimedia Movement's grantmaking strategy best support our communities?,
define standards and principles for resource allocation in the Wikimedia
Movement etc. (among other roles that you can find here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_Resource_Distribution_Committee/Crea…>
)
We absolutely need gender diversity to help solve these challenges. For
years, women and non-binary people in this movement have been paving the
way for greater representation in decision-making and leadership spaces,
and I think this committee can be a great opportunity in this direction as
well.
I’d like to invite you to consider nominating yourself, or encouraging a
colleague to apply. We’ve already received over 20 nominations, but we miss
the gender diversity we need to build into this committee.
The call for nominations closes on March 31st. You can find more
information about the requirements here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_Resource_Distribution_Committee/Crea…>
(you
don’t need to meet all of them!). Feel free to reach out to me (Anna
Torres) on Telegram or via email at atorres-ctr(a)wikimedia.org if you have
any questions.

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] [Global Resource Distribution Committee] Extension
for volunteer seats open call
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear all,
*The call for candidates to constitute the interim Global Resource
Distribution Committee (GRDC) is being extended until March 31.* The
Wikimedia Foundation team organizing the GRDC creation process has taken
this decision to keep promoting the call among different communities and
welcome more candidates for all seats. The extension of the call for
candidates doesn’t affect those who have applied already.
The interim GRDC is expected to manage the Wikimedia Community Fund, set
the community grants strategy of the Wikimedia movement, and advise the
Wikimedia Foundation on funding Wikimedia organizations and other volunteer
efforts. This new body will oversee the Regional Fund Committees and evolve
their scope and processes as needed, among other duties (check the Q&A
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_Resource_Distribution_Committee/Crea…>
for more details). We need to form a good team of Wikimedians with a
strategic and global mindset to set the interim GRDC for success. If you
want to be part of this committée, check the details in the original call
for candidates announcement
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Global_Resource_Distribution_Committee…>
and submit your candidacy for one of the open volunteer seats if you
qualify.
Best,
Jorge Vargas
Director of Community Resources and Partnerships

Subject: Updates on resource distribution proposal and creation of interim
Global Resource Distribution Committee
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello everyone,
I'm Jorge Vargas, Director of Community Resources and Partnerships. I will
be sharing an update on the Wikimedia Foundation's July 2024 proposal to
create an experimental Global Resource Distribution Committee (GRDC) and to
update the resource distribution models of the movement. This new version
of the proposal comes after months of conversations with different
stakeholders in the movement.
The Wikimedia Foundation will create the interim Global Resource
Distribution Committee
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Global_Resource_Distribu…>
(GRDC) in March, as a 2-year experiment, in another step to decentralize
the distribution of funds across the Wikimedia Movement. This body will be
responsible for making decisions over the Community Fund
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Grants:Start#Wikimedia_C…>
and the structures and processes to distribute it. It will also oversee
the Regional Fund Committees
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Grants:Committees>
(RFCs).
The interim GRDC will advise the Foundation on how to allocate grants
across regional, and if determined, thematic allocations. It will also
provide recommendations and insights to the Foundation on how much of its
budget should be made available for grants distribution. The final decision
on the total budget allocation for grants to later be allocated in
different portfolios will remain with WMF, with the interim GRDC advising
and working jointly with the Foundation throughout all the steps of the
process. We will recruit the initial 13 members of the committee through
self-nominations and invitations made in collaboration with the RFCs and
affiliates.
Last July, the Board of Trustees proposed
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Wikimedia_Foundation_Boa…>
an experimental resource distribution committee as part of their resolution
and vote on the Movement Charter
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_Foundation_Board_noticeboard…>
. We have gathered community and affiliate feedback through several
conversations at Wikimania, regional events, consultations with affiliates,
Regional Fund Committees, and online. These are the main changes based on
this feedback:
- Form the interim GRDC in March with a diverse group of specialized
volunteers and staff. The initial proposal was to start in January and only
with former RFC members.
- Empower the interim GRDC to evolve the Regional Fund Committees after
its creation. The initial proposal was to create the GRDC and evolve the
RFCs at the same time and on a tighter schedule.
For more detailed information, please check the updated proposal
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Global_Resource_Distribu…>
(Diff version
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Global_Resource_Distribution_C…>)
and the reasoning
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Global_Resource_Distribu…>
behind the changes. We continue to welcome feedback to improve the plan and
polish details, and we will finish the plan to create the new committee
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Global_Resource_Distribu…>
in the next few weeks. We want to start the call for self-nominations at
the beginning of February. If you or someone you know might be a good fit,
we encourage you to stay tuned and get involved.
Let us know if you have any comments or questions here or in the respective
Meta talk pages.
Kind regards,
Jorge
